Think of it as an AC motor and a DC motor having a love child. A brushless DC motor has permanent magnets mounted on the rotor and multiple sets of windings in the housing. Power is supplied to the windings in a sequence of pulses and polarity (positive or negative) to to create torque.This is probably my ignorance but how can you have multi-phase DC? I thought the "phase" part required the wave effect of AC.
