I bought one in 1982 for $50. Carried it a few times in the service. I still have the original leather sheath as well as an Assault Systems nylon sheath. No box but I think I still have the original receipt. Serial number shows it as 1981 production. I’ve looked on line some and the asking prices for similar vintage knives vary from about $200-$500. Does anyone know if these are reasonable prices or just wishful thinking? I doubt I’d sell it but I hardly every take it out of the safe any more. Adjusted for inflation what I paid yields $152.14 so selling it for $200 would be a shitty return anyway, but $500…hmm.

Big money are the older gray handle versions, without the box and carried/sharpened you are on the lower end of the magic sliding value scale but $200 isn't unreasonable. Collectors are weird.

Years ago my dalmatian ate the sheath of my MKII. That stopped me from carrying it as I haven't been able to find a replacement.

Assault Systems was one of the first places to make cordura holsters and bags. The knife sheath is pretty cool. I think it’s someplace in a big cedar chest we have where all the nylon bags, holsters, and slings end up. I probably need to go through and clean that up.

Yes they bring 2-300 used but not abused. The high end are the wasp waisted early version without serrations. I sold mine and bought a great knock off for $50 because I do use it.

I have a Gerber Mk I with a leather sheath I bought in the UK in 1982, there is no way I would ever sell it.

I am pretty sure I was a newly-minted E-3 (A1C) when I bought it. Can't remember the price, but it wasn't cheap especially for what I was making at the time (about $300 every two weeks).

Heck.....any knife purchased in the UK is a collectors item in itself.

Unfortunately, there's much more information available on the Mk II and almost none on the Mk I. They kept track of the serial numbers on the Mk IIs as well, but not the Mk 1s.

The Mk I was in production from 1976-97. The original blade length (5") was changed to 4¾" in 1980 or 1981 (mine's a 4¾"). Black blades were introduced in 1984. That "Vertical 1" (the knife in the logo is in line with the axis of the blade and not slanted to the right) Gerber logo and was used 1981-89. The Command I was very similar but with one side of the blade being serrated.

My Mk1 came from the BX at Columbus and I think was $25.

I looked up the receipt for the Mk2 - it was $51.65 from a place in Scarboro, ME in 1982. I couldn’t find the receipt for the Mk1, but going through that file (guns, knives, and accessories) was a trip down memory lane. I found a bunch of old Hogue receipts from when they had just started up, and a receipt for a brand new Iver Johnson TP22. Since we are doing pics…the nylon scabbard is the Assault Systems Mk1 scabbard. I’ll have to find the one for the Mk2 - it’s around here someplace.
