    320 vs 203

There are going to be some varying opinions. More so between ole vets and young bucks. The 203 mounted on an 24' M16 is going to contrast sharply to the feel of a 16' M4 with a 320 (a heavy compacted version of its predecessor)

There always is. There is a guy that I work with that is a retired Marine that served in Vietnam that destines anything that looks like an M16 at all. And my buddy that is a designated Marksman in the Marine Core and he loves his MK 12 MOD13.

I have never been in the military so I couldn't tell you that I like either one more than the other. But the 203 looks more ......... Basic. And anytime you make something easier to operate in a high stress situation like combat, the better off you will be. But, on the other hand if you know how to operate the more complex weapon I would imagine you could handle it just as good as the other. Be safe out there guys and as always thanks for your service.

Now see there, that is so simple. A lot less to screw up mechanically (the weapon not the operator) when things are going 190 MPH and Jihad Johny is shooting at you. P.S I've seen it before in pics I just couldn't find one that I could post. Is that you Claymore?

Not me sir, just a random photo I found.

That is awesome stuff. Few people know that the 36th was some of the first Americans to set foot in Europe.

My dad was in the Texas National Guard when he got called up. He was 20 years old.
1st stop was north Africa then Europe.
The battle he said was the worst was at Monte Casino / the Rapido river crossing.
What I have read and heard from the men that were there was it was a bloody, muddy killing field.
The Germans held the high ground and pounded the Allies with 88mm day and night.

The Germans held the high ground and pounded the Allies with 88mm day and night.

They were in Monte Cassino which was off-limits to allied bombers initially, but after observation flights they bombed and shelled that place into small rocks. The German Forward Observers then moved into the remaining abbey and zeroed 88, 105, and mortar fire on the allied troops trying to make their way up the mountains. Since they were on the mountains you can't dig temporary fortifications like foxholes, add in a bunch of rocks as shrapnel and you get a really ugly situation for anything that isn't armored.

The Allied advance had the US troops in the center crossing the river and attacking the Gustav line head-on while the French attacked the flank to the North and the British to the South. The US also landed troops at Anzio in an attempt to encircle the Germans.

The German Fallschirmjaeger (Paras) held their ground like a tick. The entire reason why we had trouble at Monte Cassino was because of the German FJ and Berg units. These were generally hand-picked volunteers of the German army and highly specialized in all aspects of small unit and mountain warfare. They were much more effective than SS units.

With the way the Allied command handled the first invasion of the area, if the Germans would have reinforced Kesselring the attack at Anzio would have faultered, and prevented the 2nd better planned attack. Eventually the Allies would have taken it, but not without sustaining significantly more casualties.

Didn't help that the German commander was a veteran of WWI and a previous artillery commander.

Alan from the 1st hand accounts I heard as a kid from the men that were there this was a ungodly nightmare for the 36th Div.
They were basically pined down by 88's and dead men laying everywhere. We had to get our dead and wounded out at night because any movement during daylight was suicide.
At nigh the German fired "Screaming Mimi (Nebelwerfer)" a rocket style launcher ranging in size from 15 to 32 centimeters.
Even though the Germans would not hit anything they keep the troops up all night flying overhead.
I read several books on this battle and every Allied group involved pretty much got the crap beat out of them till the bombing took place.
