damn laws. what if a person defaulted on a student loan after a divorce but later paid it off. is this something that would keep the hypothetical person from getting a CHL?

No, only if you are currently in default; also being in default on student loans is no longer a disqualifier.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but my question's along the same kind of lines...

Why have I never been blinked at? Every stime I've purchased a firearm, I've been approved instantly over the phone... Even the first one was immediate. Did I just get lucky? Is that typical?

Have you ever been charged with a crime?

In my experience, it IS pretty typical, especially if your name is not a common one. I've NEVER been delayed/denied, even prior to having a CHL. Then again, my name isn't a common one, and that helps, too.

Well it came back from the academy that i got a proceed a couple of hours after i left the store just never received the phone call...and on the mcbrides purchase it came back 4-5 days later i got a proceed. So since it was inpatient or whatever for my DWI classes i should be fine for my CHL right?
