I have had pretty good care by the Central Texas VA.....cant really complain. After a simple request.....got a change of Dr. to one who actually gives a shit. Have received a couple of free surgeries (carpal tunnel) and outside referrals to the necessary specialists. Will be doing hip replacement soon. Only complaint I have is lack of dental care.........oh......they will pull 'em alright. Just won't do restorative work unless 100% service connected disability.

    There's a reason for that.

I know here in Dallas the number of Veterans qualifying for dental care has gone up 7000% in the past 27 years and they still have the same number of providers.

Yesterday I happened to be close to the DMV office in Georgetown, so I thought I would stop in and renew my driver's license that expires next month. Walked in to find a computer terminal where one is supposed to enter info and get a number. Got the number, looked around and saw about 80 people in the waiting area. They were calling a number every two or three minutes, so I did the math and left.

This morning I go online and get an appointed time to be there to avoid the long wait. 11:15am. Okay, not bad. I get to the DMV, go to the computer terminal, and type in my cell number. A ticker with a number pops out and I take a seat. Less than 15 minutes later my number gets called. Hey, this is great! I go to the designated area, employee greats me, asks for my DL. No problem, here ya go. "Now", he says,"Did you bring your birth certificate?" I say WHAT? Hell no, what for? New policy started about 4 weeks ago. Everyone has to show proof of citizenship. Doh! What about a DD214? Nope.

So I'm sent away empty handed and with a very heavy and angry heart. Now I will have to make another trip to the DMV, my third trip. If I can find my birth certificate that is. So far, no luck finding it. I swear it's in the house somewhere.

No problem. I can just request one on line right? Correct. Easy as pie. But.....processing time is 20-25 business days not including mailing time. Cutting it mighty close to my DL expiration date.

Maybe partially my fault. I looked all over the DMV website the day before. I never saw birth certificate mentioned in the required documentation for renewals.

Do you have a passport? If so, won't that work?

    Damn!

I can see needing a birth certificate to get your first DL, but not to renew.

The 4 weeks ago thing might be bs. They wanted a lot when I got mine.

When my wife got hers, the gal wanted to see the marriage certificate. Pretty soon we will need a dr exam, dna test, to show we are who we are. Even then the brilliant folks working there might still give people a hard time.

... at which point most people will say screw it and just not do it, then let the courts get tired of sorting it out, which will then complain up the chain they can't get anything done, etc.

Yes, passport will work. I don't have one. When I go back, I'm bringing birth certificate, SS card, military ID, DD214, proof of insurance, anything they might ask for. I'm just glad that next time I should be able to renew on line. I think.

This time I my DL might expire before I receive the certified copy of my birth certificate from the state. Here's another thing. You can go to state agency in Austin and walk out in 10 or 15 minutes with a certified birth certificate in hand.

Why can't the DMV sync up on line with the state Bureau of Vital statics to verify my citizenship?

I'm curious as to if they have started disallowing on line renewals for everyone who hasn't verified their citizenship. I wasn't able to renew online this time anyway because I renewed online the last time.

Now I see that lawful presence has to be verified by DHS before a DL can be issued. This could be the cause of another delay. If I had known about all this, I would have started the renewal process a month ago.
    https://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/LawfulStatusDLID.htm

"When at the driver license office, the Customer Service Representative (CSR) will verify the period of lawful presence with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). A driver license or ID card cannot be issued until the period of lawful presence is verified by DHS. If the CSR is unable to immediately verify the information electronically, an additional verification is initiated and the individual will be given instructions on what to do next."

How can anyone be really sure that the person described in the birth certificate that I present as an ID is really me? Does Beto know about this crap?

In my particular case, I have a longstanding US Passport that I had to provide a certified copy of my birth certificate to get. And I am also Global Entry with C&BP which I had to provide a facial and eye scan along with a highly detailed application and background check to get. https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry

When I renew my DL next month (can't renew on line as I did so last time) I will be taking my Passport, Global Entry photo ID card, and my DD214 with me. I should be good to go, but will report back regardless after I get it done.

    Out here by the lake!
I had a package originally going to be here Monday comes Tuesday. I get an e-mail saying its on the front porch, as I'm heading out to get it the wife tells me to get the dogs food out of her trunk. I look outside on the porch & in my mail box no package.

I go get the dog food & can hear this talking so I know it's the mailman on his phone. I watch him put the letters in the mail box then just throw the box on the ground. I say useless POS loud enough for him to look up & see he's busted. He doesn't bat an eye & keeps talking on his phone as he walks away.

Too many have poor ethics. I’m glad you called him a pos.

My AZ license is good till 2035. It was issued in the 90s. Solves lots of problems. Even thoug you surrender it when you move here you just submit a change of address and get a new one when we go back. No extended bs.

We did still have to prove citizenship and residency when we moved here 10 years ago.

Texas should do the same as it reduces the amount of people needing to go to the states absolutely horrendous dmv or dps offices. It all seems bass ackwords to me.

I wont even start on the 5 days total time in the DPS office it took to get two kids drivers Licenses. Fraking retarded bullsheit.

So, do you need to provide your DL to get a birth certificate?

LOL! Catch 22. But to answer your question, no. I did it on line and had to provide the DL# and audit#, but not a photo of the actual license. They really have no idea who is actually requesting the birth certificate. You just have to swear it's you under penalty of law.

Until last flight to Denver and back, I had been 'randomly selected' for body search (or whatever it's called) every time I'd flown with any member of my family...for the previous 11 years. Literally.

Flying to San Fran w/wife and 2 kids? They sailed through, but I got 'randomly selected.'

Flying to Nyc, Boston, Seattle, Vancouver, LA, Las Vegas...and I think 10 or so more cities... they all go through, but I was pulled aside every single time. Didn't matter if they all went in front, behind, or around me, all 3 went through fine, and I was pulled aside. When I flew alone, never had a problem, never got searched once.

2 weeks ago wife and I flew out of Austin, on Frontier airlines, to Denver. There's a tiny terminal on the other side of the Austin airport... I thought for a minute our Lyft driver was pulling some funny business, or just an idiot... I ddin't know about that terminal. Anyway, checked my bag, with my P365 inside...declared it...figured I'd get patted and maybe probed, as usual.

My wife said I acted butt hurt that they DIDN't 'randomly select' me this time. It was simply shock. Promise.
