Griffin Armament Recce 7 Testing

Finally got a chance to get some testing done on my Recce 7 today after having to work through some issues with my load and rifle. I know theres not a lot of information out there about these as I pretty much bought one as soon as Silencer Shop got them in stock. Their taper mount system is almost exactly like the Brake Attach versions of TBAC cans except the Griffin taper is a lot steeper so the thread protector isn't so dang big. I was originally planning on going the TBAC 30BA route but when I saw that these were coming out for about 40% cheaper and only a couple ounces heavier I figured Id give them a shot.

I chose the Recce 7 for my 308 as I didn't want a giant can hanging off the end but still wanted a muzzle brake for when I wasn't shooting suppressed. Now that Ive been shooting with the can on I don't think Ill go back to shooting without especially since it seems like my groups shrink by about a tenth of an inch with it on. I also ordered a PHS338 that should be here within the next week or so that Ill try out on my 300WM although its not quite as accurate as my 308 but should still be able to test its accuracy potential fairly well.

After dealing with inconsistent POI shift with my yhm qd can I knew I wanted either direct thread or some sort of taper mount. I didn't really want a direct thread as I wouldn't be able to use the can on multiple thread pitches so that left the taper mount manufacturers. To my knowledge TBAC and Griffin are the only companies making a taper mount type of mount. Ive shot quite a few TBAC cans and was planning on buying their 30BA and 338BA but with Griffin bringing to market essentially the same thing only slightly heavier it made the decision easy. For what the 338BA was going to cost me I was able to get both of the cans I wanted with a little weight being the only penalty. Since most of the work my 5Rs do is from the bench and prone the weight doesn't concern me much.

The test gun is a factoryish R700 5R 24" with the barrel threaded by a local smith. It has a triad stock pack, PCR bolt knob, Timney flat blade trigger, harris bipod, seekins 20moa rail, seekins low 30mm rings and vortex PST 4-16. In this test I was shooting 178gr amaxs over 43.8gr of varget at a 2.8" COL in hornady brass with federal 210 primers at 2680fps.

I use TAB gear SASR covers on my cans. They work awesome, are quality and made right here in Texas

The only thing left to do is mess with the muzzle brake timing and see if I cant rotate the shift to be vertical so I can adjust more easily for the shift although I believe Im just going to zero the rifle with the can on as I don't plan on shooting without it now that Ive got a can that doesn't hamper accuracy anymore. Eventually it might be destined to ride on my 12.5" 6.8 AR and pick up the new Sportsman model they have coming out that is larger(ie quieter) and only weighs 12oz but still uses the same mounts. With a silencer of this size its not really going to be super quiet, the main benefits I look for are knocking down the recoil, concussion, and being able to shoot all day with just my surefire defender ear plugs in. Running just ear plugs allows me to get much better cheek weld and helps for a long day of shooting. If I want it really quiet I can always thread on the PHS338 Ive got coming which is a lot of can for a 308 but it should sound sweet. With any luck hopefully I can test it out next weekend.

Overall Im very happy with my purchase. I essentially got the precision of the venerable TBAC silencers at dang near half the cost. I believe their mount system is a win and it provides the repeatability youd expect from that type of design.

Why the suppressor cover? Wouldn't you want to dissipate the heat? Unless you're frequently mounting and removing the suppressor on the fly?

Its to minimize heat waves/mirage from hampering your view through the scope.

Huh. My friends and I were commenting the other day how much more difficult it was to shoot outdoors with my suppressors due to the mirage effect. Do they make one of them cover doohickies to fit over the occidental shape of an Osprey can?

TAB can make you whatever you want. When you order the cover you state the diameter and length.

Little update. I went out again trying to figure out why I have such an odd shift with the can on. Tried 3 different mounts and rotated one 180* with shims. All POI was the same. I dont recommend this and the manufacturer hadnt designed it for 300wm but there isnt a huge difference in muzzle pressure between a 16" 308 and 26" 300wm so I said screw it and put it on. POI was straight down 1 inch. Weird thing is both guns were threaded by the same smith and both are factory R700 5R barrels.

My specwar should be here next week as well as my PHS338. Im going to try those as well, if they net the same result I'm going to have a talk with the smith. Really hate to have him chop the barrel shorter and lose velocity to get a straight shoulder for the muzzle brake to seat on.
