NRA-ILA :: Bloomington, Indiana Herald-Times Treats Law-Abiding Gun Owners like Registered Sex Offenders!

On November 30, 2009, the Bloomington Herald-Times made the following announcement:

NRA-ILA :: Bloomington, Indiana Herald-Times Treats Law-Abiding Gun Owners like Registered Sex Offenders!

“This week, HeraldTimesOnline.com will launch its new gun permit database. You’ll be able to search gun permit records by county, city or town and street."

The Herald-Times has begun receiving calls and emails, and their response is a defiant defense of their online gun permit database.

Anyone who visits the newspaper website will be able to search the number of permits on a given street or neighborhood. Although at this point the names and house numbers are not listed, the newspaper’s website treats law-abiding Indiana gun owners like sex offenders on a searchable database.

It is NRA's firm belief that there is no public good served by the publishing or cataloguing private citizens’ gun ownership information, and that more harm is done by such an action. Law-abiding Hoosiers should not be subjected to the same treatment as sex offenders, and if the newspaper won’t listen to their constituents and customers, then NRA Members and Indiana gun owners should send a financial message by cancelling their subscriptions to the Bloomington Herald-Times.

Please contact the Bloomington Herald-Times to respectfully voice your displeasure at the irresponsible action the newspaper has made.

On the other hand it'll let the criminals know who NOT to rob, possibly resulting in fewer rapes and robberies for the armed and...well...heaven help the unarmed citizens......

That is just great. I'm glad I'm not living in that state. I grew up in Ohio, and like above I thought Indiana was a friendly gun state. Here's my question though. This just didn't happen. They had to get permission to do this right?

I just looked up Indiana on NRA's website.

They don't have a gun registration, but they do have carry permits.

This paper must be publishing the carry permits.

How they got that info, I don't know. I know DPS is not allowed to give that info to anyone. Personally, I'd sue the pants of them, boycott them, and post everyone on the Indiana Herald Times' info on the web.

    Dear Sirs
    After reading the Article
H-T targeted over gun permit database

I have come to the conclusion that your company is complicit and arrogant to the point of being comical.

The publishing of any personal data of any person is a direct violation of that persons privacy.

I understand that your organization falls in step with barack obama's agenda in demolishing our Constitution.

For this, I hope your company fails and goes bankrupt.

    Thanks for your e-mail, Thor.

To clarify, there are no names in this data base. There are no specific street addresses in this data base. It would be nearly impossible if not totally impossible for anyone to find out private information is included - it's online behind the paid wall on our web site and is not published in the newspaper.

Here is a sample of what it is:
W Allen St Bloomington Monroe 16 G4 - lifetime personal protection
Allen St Bloomington Monroe 1 G1 - four year personal protection
W Allen Bloomington Monroe 1 G4 - lifetime personal protection
    W. Allen St. Bloomington Monroe 1 G4 - lifetime personal protection
W Allen St. Bloomington Monroe 1 G4 - lifetime personal protection
Allen Court S Bloomington Monroe 1 G1 - four year personal protection
West Allen St. Bloomington Monroe 1 G4 - lifetime personal protection
W Allen Street Bloomington Monroe 2 G4 - lifetime personal protection
West Allen Bloomington Monroe 1 G1 - four year personal protection
West Allen Street Bloomington Monroe 3 G1 - four year personal protection
