    Gun Rights Versus Anecdotes

Which side wins depends on whether one can reason or simply react emotionally.

For a while back in the Winter, a retired philosophy professor (who wants to remain anonymous) and I exchanged a few emails and, from him, snail mail, discussing gun rights. After not hearing from him for several months he very unexpectedly mailed me a large envelope containing forty-nine newspaper clippings with many reports of shootings and a few anti-gun rights op-eds (and, strangely, a pro-gun op-ed by John Lott). He also included a fund raising letter from the Brady Campaign, another one from the Children's Defense Fund Action Counsel, a magazine ad from the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, and a hand written note. Especially surprising for their absence were any articles from scholarly source. Are there no scholarly articles in favor of gun control? He sent almost all anecdotes from mass media sources leaning heavily towards the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. One would expect better from university professor.

None that I know of. Even by private entities.

If there are, they don't want them known.
They probably would not help the case for gun control. Even the antedotal stuff can be refuted or have no base in established fact that I know of.

About 8 miles out by the river. Closer to the lake though.
Come on up and shoot sometime.
More precise, north or the river about a mile from gravel crossing.

No shortage of scholarly articles on guns. One of the best is the one Harvard did a few years back. So why don't you hear more, the media does not support guns in any way so it never comes out, Then of course John Lott has done a lot of research on this and his stuff is out there.

So what's the logic behind using anecdotal articles to support their position? More articles = more people who share the sentiment, so it must be true? Seems kinda weak...

Sounds more like he's a professor of sophistry, not philosophy.

LOL! I agree.More anecdote:I'm a retired musician who reads philosophy as a hobby,
and I can attest to the fact that not all philosophy professors reason rather than emote, and call it reason. There are philosophers who have guns and understand/
support Second Amendment rights.I do both,as well.

An Anti-Gun supporter was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned
to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike
up a conversation with your fellow passenger."
The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total
stranger, "What would you want to talk about?"
"Oh, I don't know," said the Gun Control advocate "I noticed on your jacket you have an
NRA Eddie Eagle patch and a patch that says My Daddy is a Life Memeber NRA.
How about why we should have gun control" as he smiled smugly.

"Okay," she said. "That could be an interesting topic but let me ask
you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same
stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns
out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?"

Mr Gun control, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence,
thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which
the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss
Gun Control, when you don't know shit ?
