I'm been tinkering with the idea of getting into gun smithing... is there any good schools in Texas for this field? or maybe an apprenticeship program?

Well I don't plan on going out of state for gun smithing school... as much as I want to do it. OK, how do people here in TX get their gun smithing education?? does everyone go out of state, or can you apprentice with someone?

There are self taught smiths. Kind of like a tattoo artist you have to do alot of work before people will let you loose on their's.

I know the Murray college has week long classes in the summer. Some gunsmiths like the great Bruce Gray http://www.grayguns.com/
have classes you can take. In fact Bruce is starting a 1911 armour's course that travels.

Sadly there are just not enough good smiths in Texas to have the opportunity to apprentice with.
Also check with The American Pistolsmith Guild http://www.americanpistol.com/ They might have some good info.

There are no gunsmithing specific schools located in texas. I would look in a machinist program at a local community college. Thats the route I took and I got my manual machinist certificate in three semesters. Going for CNC now. I would then find a gunsmith to apprentice under. But a strong background in manual machining will definitely be a plus when you look for someone to work under. Will you specialize in pistol or rifle or just do general gunsmithing?
