    Hey all,

Anyone have ideas on where to source inexpensive guns to practice/project gunsmith skills?

I’m looking for guns that if I mess them up I’ll be able to roll with it. Thinking old all metal guns Might be best.

Any ideas or info much appreciated.

Forget the old. Look at the 10/22.

You can buy it piece by piece. You can modify the receiver, bolt, trigger, mag release, sights, and stock. Lots of barrels to choose. It offers areas that fairly technical yet easy enough to gain a understanding of how it all works together. What it takes to hotrod it.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I’ve customized a few 10/22s, assembled ARs, Trigger kits on striker fired pistols, etc.

I am really looking for more than just assembling from purchased parts.

Pawn shops, LGS, and smaller local shows. Look for a beat up 1911 and a beat up 10/22.

Let folks know you’re interested in a project gun here and on Texas gun trader.

See if there are any stupid "gun buy back" events near you. Go there, set up a table on the sidewalk outside, and offer $10 more than the folks running the buyback for each gun. Not only will you get plenty of guns in varying conditions to practice on, you might save something valuable or historically significant.
