Besides XD and 1911, what other decent handguns have grip and other safties? Something a small child would have difficulty with. A friend was considering getting a handgun but has a parent with dementia that is somewhat unpredictable. Safe storage precautions aside, I'm looking for additional mechanical safeties.

DOA semi autos, magazine disconnects, key locks, a safe.

    1911’s, S&W EZ’s, XD’s Uzi’s, S&W lemon squeeze revolver and others have rear grip safety’s. The H&K P7 series has a front squeeze cocker.

Your question refers to something a small child would have difficulty with and I think that a safety alone is not enough. Kids can get through almost any safety. The ability to rack a slide would essentially be a consideration and this would mean not having one in the chamber.
So are you talking small child or an adult with dementia? This may require one of those lockable gun cases with RFID technology. I wouldn't count on a safety alone for a dementia patient.

In my opinion, if you have kids, you have a moral obligation to lock up guns in a safe. Kids are curious and you can't say "My Johnny would never touch my guns...". Shit happens all the time, and the kids pay the price.
Yup. Relying on a mechanical device to stop a kid is dangerous. Kids are clever and they will beat whatever grip safety or lock you put in front of them.

Lock them up, and look into the Eddie Eagle program.

My Ruger SP101 takes some very strong hand grip...none of the women in my family can make it go bang!

Trigger pull is something like 12/14 lbs.

When my kids were little, I had a 1911 without a round in the chamber. The little ones were nowhere near strong enough to jack the slide. When they reached the age where they had more strength, I taught them gun safety and how to shoot. They then appreciated that a gun was not a toy. They realized the damage it could do. Their curiosity was sated. And this kept them safe not just around my loaded guns, but if they went to someone else's house and ran across a loaded gun.

The thing about someone with dementia is...while they may have the thought processes of a child, they have the knowledge of an adult to go with it.

The only safe course of action would be for your friend to have the firearm on his/her body whenever it's not locked up. An adult with dementia can disengage a safety, and their hands will be large enough to disengage a grip safety as well. Depending on the individual, the demetia patient may also still have enough strength to rack the slide on a firearm.
