A fantastic resource for this is AR15.COM

You will really need to determine the purpose of the rifle before you build it.

It's similar to saying "I need a new vehicle, help me out." without describing what type of driving you do, people that will be riding in it, towing needs, etc.

I ultimately went with a mid-length system Rock River as it seemed like a pretty good compromise between different things I was looking for. That rifle however would not be a good 300 yard varmint rifle though.

+1 on AR15.com. There is a thread that runs through many of the options that will either confuse you or leave you with a great idea of what you want. Once you know what you want then you can determine the best way to get the various parts. Be aware that with the election most vendors now have a significant back log of orders.

Here you go.. i have shot a lot of ar-15's .. if you want a gun to shoot.. not to sit in the safe.. not to treat like a baby but a gun you can take out to the ranch.. shoot it.. maybe even drop it on accident :) that will not break the bank and you are not scared to take it out of your home and fire because you don't want the value of the gun to go down like a colt 6920 .. go this route

Find a stag arms lower.. which up until 2 weeks ago you could get for $99.99 now they are running $150 .. Find a local dealer that will sell you one or order one and get it shipped to a cheap FFL for $20.00 Once you find that.. you order this straight to your door step.

AR15.COM :: Forums :: STAG RIFLE KIT LESS STRIPPED LOWER Shipped see GROUP BUY SECTION for SALE Details and Photos

find a friend or a gun shop owner or someone that knows to put it together for you. or just read google or ar15.com for instructions and there you go..

brand new ar-15 m4 with sights, pistol grip, and adjustable stock with a 30 round magazine. for under $800.00

I recommend this kit because stag is a good company, has tighter tolerances than bushmaster/colt due to its lack of govt involvement. The gun will work well for most applications and is affordable.

please email, im , w/e for any more help. I feel that I have a good idea of how to put together an economical ar-15 shooter :) A lot of my friends argue with me but the truth is if you are going to use your firearm more than twice a year and you are not military or police officers and really depend on your firearm to protect your own life and the life of others around you don't spend $1200.00 on it, and then put $350 rails on it, and $500 red dot sights on it etc etc.. because that equipment will get scratched, damaged, USED in the field.

AusTex makes a very good argument. Be aware though that the current backlog on those kits is 7 or 8 weeks. Also stag lowers are hard to find right now. If you do find them get what you need and let me know where. I need one for the kit I have coming.

Not a problem. Again many will argue with me and I am not recommending putting airsoft ar-15 parts on your rifle however there are top of the line companies and there are lower end companies that still make a good product just not as well known for example:

Eotech - $400-$700++ for a red dot scope ... what i would do..

Pick up a bushnell Holo Sight for half the price

Larue, daniel defense, KAC RAS ( handguard rails for lights etc ) $250-400.00

What I do, pickup a YHM quad rail brand new for $125.00 .. Fits tight works well ... and when i scratch it out at the ranch I am not crying...

So just do your research find what you like and buy for your application :)

I'm kind of late into the thread here, but let me add a few comments. If you like hands on projects and enjoy DIYS things, you will find building an AR a fun and rewarding project. It's something you can share with friends, and kids if you've got any old enought (10 or older I'd say)

Unless you have some compelling reason to have an operational gun ASAP, take your time. Read up on things, (AR15.COM as already suggested) and pick your components at the level you feel comfortable at assembling... by that I mean, you might want to buy an assembled upper, rather than invest in the fixtures etc you need to completely assemble the receiver, barrel, gas block and hand guards.

    Good luck

Just fyi, Brownells has an excellent series of videos that walks you through building an AR from the ground up, and details everything involved. They are available to watch online for free here:

Brownells - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories and Gunsmithing Tools

It's nice seeing someone actually perform the steps and assemble the gun as opposed to just reading about it. I'll say this much, assembling AR lowers looks like child's play to me now. ;)

Ar rifles are super easy to build, IF you have the right tools to put them together with. I have built several match rifles, with Krieger bbls, that shot almost as good as my bolt guns. Just go slow, you will be fine.

Damn. I didn't realize they had the whole series online.... My girlfriend just bought the DVD for me for Christmas... I just watched the whole thing a couple of days ago and it is better than porn.... :)

Are you the owner of Model 1 Sales? Have a store location? I'd like to ride over one day and visit if so.

    Let me know. Thanks.

    Not me.

I have met all the folks from Model 1 Sales that come out to the gun shows in this area, and they certainly seem like good folks to me. No matter how rude some customers act (Yankees) or how dumb a question someone will ask them, they just stay even tempered, level headed and polite, a lot better than most of us could.

They have a good selection at good prices.

If I was going to buy an upper today, that would be the first place that I would look.

Go to ar15.com and search for model1 sales. Trust me you will end up going with del-ton, J-T doublestar, cmmg, or somebody else for kits.
