Anyone actually do this, or think it's feasible?

I like the idea of .45ACP. Big, heavy, and slow.

Like any other mechanical thing, test it and see. Like the 'Pie said, they've got a good rep. Their pistols are butt ugly, but I rarely see a review where they don't work either. They're fun to make fun of and all, but I wouldn't like staring down a barrel of one.

Not saying it wont' work, I own a Hi-Point 4595 and it is very accurate and reliable.
If that is all you have then go for it, however; there are obviously better choices for home defense.
It is a range toy ONLY for me.

The 9 shot mag IMO limits it greatly as a home defense weapon.

    Gunz are icky.
There is an aftermarket bullpup stock available for the Hi-Point carbine that greatly improves its looks. Not cheap tho.
    Does shorten the overall length.
    Might look into that.
If Hi-Point ever makes their carbine accept Glock mags they'd have a home run on their hands.

I have the 9mm HP carbine.

I've run roughly 500 rounds through it.

    It's never hiccuped even once.

That is, zero failures of any kind.

I wouldn't buy any of their pistols, but my 9mm carbine is a delight.

Everything other gun of mine is high quality, but a HP carbine, low cost and they work.

    In the woods...
I've never heard anything but good about their pistol caliber carbines. I've got a buddy who bought aaKeltec carbine in .380 for less than $200 new. I don't get the need for a carbine in .380, but he loves it.
