Back in the late 1980's, I was hunting a ranch managed by J.W. Johnson, who was the D.A. for the several large mostly empty counties including Sutton County and west, our past Ozona.
Arriving at the ranch west of Junction early, I ran into J.W.'s Brother, a West Texas native and experienced rancher.
He showed me several recently sutured lacerations on his legs. He said that, on the previous afternoon, he had been attacked by a herd of Javelinas. He was inspecting fences and accidentally came upon the animals, which immediately attacked, knocked him to the ground, and scared him quite badly.
He said that he had been around Javelinas all his life and never anticipated something like that.
I was down in Big Bend to see Haley's Comet and doing hikes during the day when I came across a herd of javelinas. Several surrounded me and two boars approached, stopped, started stamping their feet and making throaty noises. Concerned they were serious about hurting me, I scrambled on top of a small boulder and they lost interest after a while and left. I felt embarrassed that I had let such little critters scare me up on to a rock, but when I reported the incident to one of the park rangers, he said that they have occasional incidents with folks getting struck or cut by them, usually trying to take pictures from too close.
