Went to the VA in Dallas yesterday for some medical appointments. The DAV was open but since the computers in DC and Waco were off line they couldn't answer my questions. Also, the VBA office was closed for the duration of the shutdown so filing applications for disability and related stuff there is shutdown. No real affect on me as all I had were some questions but irritating none the less. These offices are not staffed by government employees yet the government shutdown effectively closed or curtailed their activities.

I now hear that if the Shut-Down continues......will not be getting VA Disability Check. That will DEFINITELY effect me and thousands of others.....many on this Forum. Coupled with the threat of not getting Social Security check.....I am getting VERY, VERY concerned.

There is not shutdown. 83% of the government is still up and running. This is just punishment and coercion in an attempt to whip the people back in line. I am willing to bet more money is being spent on enforcing what little has closed than was spent to keep it running.

Good point. Also according to Moodys...we wont actually even default on our debt.

Social security will not be affected unless Obama himself chooses to hold those payments back.

It's been talk about elsewhere but I came upon a article this morning that explains why it won't be.

For now, but if a CR isn't reached by a week from Friday, there will be a complete government shutdown to include the military.

Not only VA disability, but also retirement checks. That's several thousand dollars a month for some of us. It's gonna be interesting...

If the 17th gets here, I don't believe that the ENTIRE government will shut down. We simply wont be borrowing the 20%-30% of what we spend everyday. The government will still be taking in normal tax revenues. There should be no reason for retirement checks to not go out unless someone is just being spiteful.
That is how I understand it, but I am no expert.

Thats what i read in Moodys today. This idea that we wont pay the bills we owe is a lie.

No wonder middle-America thinks the Democrats are a bunch of apes trying to screw a football.

Winston Churchill once said Americans flounder at all they do unless it is vitally important to national survival.

This is one of those moments.

Eventually, the Senate will cave and agree with the House.

When that happens, Oby's nuts will be in a vise, and dare not veto whatever the House and Senate send to him to sign.

If the 'publicans cave, Churchill will have been proven wrong.

Basically, our senior-ranking civilian told us today that unless a CR is passed by Friday, 17 October; we're shutting down. No GS civilians, and maybe even no military. Still unclear as to whether we contractors will even be able to occupy our facility without them, no one really knows what's going on or what the future will hold. Not the best way to run a government...

I think it would be physically impossible to just shut off the entire military like a switch. Although that is your realm MMM. The last 5 years have been a lesson in "not the best way to run a government" but I think the republicans are reaching the point where they won't back down anymore. They see it gets them nowhere.

This has me concerned as well.... I'm already not getting my VA check for school and then add on the possibility of not having my disability check. Basically I wont be able to pay any of my bills.. Then what?
