Electric motors tend to do pretty well when it comes to "work", the issue is battery capacity.

As of now I don't know of any battery that can store energy for automotive application as well as petroleum based fuels. Even with the inefficiency and loss associated with IC engines they can still go much further given the same fuel cell weight/capacity as the battery powering an electric motor.

How long do you figure an electric truck could sit with the AC running?

ETA: And after driving an hour to the sight?

You pull out a gas generator to run the AC. Lol

I _think_ the electric semi is meant for local-ish deliveries, like from the airport to the city, not for long haul. You know what would be a perfect application for electrically powered vehicles? USPS delivery trucks and school buses. Also, you know what used to be a thing? Trolley trucks!

In case there is any confusion, or even if anyone cares, my questions are specifically about an electric pickup truck.

It could work. If there's one thing Musk is doing, is he's pushing hard for improvements in battery technology. Who would have thought even 10 years ago an electric car could run high 10's in a quarter mile and that same car take a 300+ mile trip? Nobody, that's who. But yet you can buy one today, with a warranty, all the creature comforts, and some pretty snazzy styling too. Oh, and it also drives itself.

I'm all for them. My problem is my driving schedule is all in town, then a 400 mile one-way trip - which means I've still got to have a gas car in the arsenal.

Keep in mind Tesla didn't sell 70,000 cars last year. Ford sold 35,000 of the Taurus last year, which is considered a has been car coasting until it's replaced or discontinued.

Tesla is a niche brand for sure, with technology that when possible to scale up will really change how we think about vehicle powertrains.

Actually, diesel generator over electric motors can actually work. Just look at all the train locomotives.

And the scary part is, Tesla is somehow worth more than GM now? If anyone here own's Tesla stock, I think now would be a great time to sell before the correction comes to bite.

Big construction equipment works the same way.

Not really part of this discussion though. I doubt any regular vehicles would go from direct drive to generator/ motor propulsion.

I think once you reach a certain level the issue becomes more related to torque. Most IC engines have certain power bands they need to operate in to be efficient and that efficiency is lost if they must be geared down to work at the speed needed.

An electric motor provides the same torque from 1 rpm up to its maximum rpm at max load. It makes them very good for moving very heavy things. And you won't be burning out clutches trying to get a train or massive wheel loader moving.
