22-250 would probably be nice too. What were you shooting?
I was the lone man with a 223 Rem Savage 10 bull barrel

I held my own out to 300 several times
Took out a lot in the 250 range
    60 grain Hornady HP

The guy with the .204 Ruger used factory ammo and just slayed them

    There also a 22-250 Akley and a 6 BR
I shot the heck out of the 6 BR

Another guy had a suppressed 17 HMR
Deadly on the closer shots for sure

The non resident NM license and the BLM permit were not bad
We spent most of one day north of Clayton on BLM

Lots of dogs and wide open

    Details man!
We went into Knotts in Clayton
A great sporting goods place. They gave us some leads as to where to go. They sold us the non resident licsenses we needed. Four day with all BLM permits were $43
The BLM permits are good for a year.
Lots of land on the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands
Get a map and a GPS and you'll be fine.

You basically can just drive out there, find a dog town and set up and shart shooting.
We had shooting tables with folding legs, lots of sand bags, sunscreen and ice chest with lots of water.
We cooked lunch on the tailgates.

We stayed in Dalhart for cheap. $70 night, double

If you go into the BLM land, you'll find towns that have not been shot at alot. You can sit back at 200 plus and shoot for hours.
Most of the shots are between 200-350
Some guys were getting them out past 400

Each shooter had a spotter, standing behind him with good binos. I took a spotting scope and binos and put the spotting scope up after the 1st hr. A good pair of binos gives you a much wider field of view and you can scan more ground.
Judging distance is so important to connecting

When you would shoot about 10 times, we would switch out and leave the bolts open to cool the guns off while it was resting. I shot more with my bolt gun than I ever have in a two day period and had one of the best experiances in my life doing it.
It made me a much better long range shooter
I can't wait to go back

How many rounds did you burn through?

I went through about 75 rounds of hand loaded 223, most of it the first day.
I did not take enough, I should have taken more.
I went through about 100 total of mine, but everyone was offering others to get on their guns and try them.
I ended up shooting the .204 Ruger about 15 times and the 6 BR about 30 times
The guys who have went before brought about 200 rounds per gun from what I gather.

I brought a rod and patch in case I needed to clean the bore at the hotel but never did. None of the guys that I was with cleaned their gun bores in between day one and two either

Its a cheap trip to make.

Gas to the panhandle, stay in Dalhart. Get supplies and non resident licsense at Knotts in Clayton.
Eat breakfast at hotel, take coolers with food, drinks , ice for the day
Drive back to Dalhart in the afternoon, wash up in the room, go out and eat at the XIT Woodfire Grill for great steaks and Que

I can't believe I have lived here for all this time, and never went prairie dog hunting...

    something else kind of gross
    They eat the dead ones!
When you shoot one, , watch the mound and pretty soon, they will come out and drag the dead one back in the hole...
