I got ya man. I am not a hvac tech and would not recommend anyone messing with hvac equipment unless qualified. There are many nuances. I wouldn't mess with my equipment even though I know a little about hvac. I find it interesting. Especially heat pumps. It seems impossible to grab heat out of the outside air when its cold like today or worse.

it's all good, just still not thrilled that they didn't design a different Schraeder valve for the new refrigerant.

Can't wait to hear what the tech says is wrong with the system...

I will be surprised if anything is mechanically wrong.

I think there is something wrong with either the install (communication between the t-stat and condenser) or the programming of the t-stat (not acting upon data received from the condenser).

Because the ONLY time it acts like this is when its cold.
I know I said under 40* but that was just a guess.

Looking at the weather tomorrow, I predict it will operate normally.

    But ...

I haven't had a tech look at the system since the initial install.
It's time to have a check up at the very least.

American standard seems to make solid equipment. I have a ruud strait cool and its a piece of shit. I only have about 10kw heat in about 1200sf. We have to run a little space heater in my bedroom on nights like tonight.

American Standard/Trane is pretty much the best there is.

Being a temp dependent problem, I'm going to wager a refrigerant issue.

I would guess low refrig charge....short cycling is a result of this.

I am a HVAC contractor in Austin, cold weather brings out these issues

    Update:

Cycling on over-pressurization after extended run times.

Today, the outside temps were in the mid-40s and it took the unit running almost 30 minutes (inside temps got to a toasty 77) to begin OP cycling.

Nothing was done to unit, but it certainly gave me piece of mind that the unit wasn't eating itself.

Any way to install a thermostat on the outside unit so that it shuts down when temps drop to a certain point?

Thats is possible but the better solution is to find out what is wrong with the unit in the first place. It should not be cutting in and out at any temperature.
