I have not been able to sleep after a sad and horrifying tragedy This morning (12:00AM) in NW Houston.

As I was driving home from a group meeting with JCC in the SW Houston Area. I decided that I should go home taking HW6 down to 529 and down to 290 since I leave in North Houston.
SO I did.... As I am getting very close to 290 down 529 I hear a big bang!!!! As I drive down the over pass I look to my left to see a horrifying accident scene!!! I was just seconds away from been hit by a Man who was coming down the wrong direction on the frontage rd of 290 and 529. The man was going at least 80Mph to 100Mph!!! He hit the Bridge wall so hard that the car looked like pile of metal!!! I quickly turn around to go under the bridge and try to assist two other man who got down to help the man in the car... As I approach the Car I can see fire is starting to rise inside the car... The man was hardly breading... Fire rises quick consuming most of the front of the car! I am trying to pull the man out but I couldn't!!! hes lower body was pinch between the door the dash and the firewall I can almost say hes leg crumbled in with the metal... I try to to talk to the man to see if he would respond as I see hes chest was moving from hard breath... He would not respond!!! I try and try to get him out but I was not humanly possible... I started to feel the heat of the fire in my hand and face so I had to back out.. I had no choice I had to step back and just watch helplessly... this is all within minutes! Finally the Police from Jersy Village got there... I have to give my heart to them! one of the cop with the blazing fire as it was... try to get the man out but he couldn't as a result he also got minor burns. Finally the Ambulance gets there and than the fire fighters... By this time the man is fully burned... And again this is all within minutes!!! SO is not like they took for ever to get there... It just was not possible for anybody to get there any faster. I have this video of the whole scene in my head and I can not shake it off! I have not sleep but a few hrs... All I keep saying to my self is that I try... and I truly did! we all tried but it was not possible. The paramedics said that he was dead on impact but I know they are saying that so we dont have bear with more but I know what I saw and I think that man was alive... One of the other guys who help saw the same thing.. hes chest was moving... One thing that the cops explain was that it could have been last impulses from the brain to the body and I can buy that since it is possible... Is horrifying to watch a human been burn... My condolences go out to his family!!! And for everybody who was there and try to help... God Bless You!

Sorry for the long post but I had to get this out of my chest.... Sorry for all the typos but I am very tired..

    I need to rest

It is obvious you did all you could do. From what you have described, I doubt that he felt or was even aware of the fire. Even if conscious, after an impact (shock) like that a person is typically in severe shock and won't necessarily feel any pain. If you couldn't get him to respond, I doubt if he felt a thing. An accident like that is tragic and the thought and memory of it will stick with you for a while. In a since you are also in shock. Experiences like this will always be with you, but will fade with time. This is also true for those who experience being victims of a crime or have experienced combat. I guess we can't go through life without something ever so often reminding us that we are mortal. If you are continuing to have trouble sleeping into next week, I would suggest talking to a professional. But, I doubt if you will need that kind of help. Talking about it here on the forums will help a lot! Be sure to talk more about it if you need too. We will gladly listen. We all need to talk sometimes.

It's easy for someone else to say say shake it off, but it's not that easy. It's normal to feel like you do so don't fret, just ride it out knowing there's near no chance you nor anyone could have done anything for him. I'd side with the paramedics on his instant death. It doesn't mean that in the last seconds to minutes the body is still; but gone nonetheless.

Take it easy, talk about it with people and know you'll get past it. No one ever gets over something like that, we just change and learn from it.

People do things without any consideration of how it will impact themselves and certainly not others. I'm sure they come back and say he was under the influence of something.

I remember back in the early 90's while I was working at John Eagle Honda there on Hwy 6 near 290, there was a wreck in from of the showroom that shook the building just minutes after I got there in the morning. An older jeep with the top off and a large truck hit near head on. The impact to the jeep was to the drivers side of the front end; so, the driver.

You don't forget sounds like that and the scene afterward. But seeing things like that make you realize what can happen more than just being told. You tend to change the way you look at and do things.....you learn.

Reading threw the ABC News story they have it all wrong. This happen in the crossing of FM529 and HW290.

You'll find that the news is a poor source of accurate info. I've noticed it more than once in regards to coverage they've done in Austin.

You did what you could, and nothing more could have been done. Think of it this way, at least you stopped and tried. In this day and age that is far from commonplace.

Now try going through all of that on a daily basis...welcome to Police/Fire/EMS's world. Thanks for the help, its quite often a bystander does more in the grand scheme of things for a patient than we do. We cant fix em if they're dead or stuck in a car! Good on ya buddy!

I know exactly what you're going through. I remember going through my everyday routine as a combat medic in Panama. My job never really sank in until I was knee deep in wounded soldiers and I still remember that feeling I had when one of them died. It's something I'll never forget. You just have to try to occupy your mind. I turned to my faith and prayed a lot. Only you know what will help you and remember that there are always people who care about you and are willing to help you through your odeal.

XD, you tried at least. That's more than most people would have done. Most people would have maybe dialed 911 and sat in their car watching everything happen. You went above and beyond. It's a tragic accident for sure, and I'm sure it will take you some time to get over it, but just know that you did what you could. Also, if the driver was still alive, at least they had someone there with them at the end that was fighting for them. Now the doctor's orders are to take two shots of whiskey and call me in the morning. ;)

Actually, I am inspired by what you did XD. Many people freeze up in tense situations. I've told myself for awhile that if I ever get in a situation where someone urgently needs my help, that I will do everything possible to help even if it poses risk to me. It's all talk of course unless I actually experience such a situation. I just hope to God I wouldn't freeze up, though after reading your story it is sort of an inspiration that will hopefully prevent that from happening and make me push ahead no matter what.

    Thank You Guys!
HK Let me tell you that in situations like that you become a whole different person. I went in to this rescue mode that I did not know I had... I knew I was in shock about the whole situation but I knew I could not stop or hesitate there was no time for it... I am sure about one thing... This is not the last time I would risk my life to safe another. Is just me... I can not stop and stare at somebody in need of help specially in that situation... Today I went down to the range at Shilohs and took some shooting therapy :P :) I spend some time chatting with Jeff and called it a day...

Wow, that is aweful! You did the right thing, you did the best you could in the situation. It will take a while to get out of your mind. You'll always remember it, but it is certainly a stronger memory now than it will be in the future. Just remember that you did what you could, that is all you can do.

It is very hard to deal with.
I Ride a zx10 and have been through a similar situation as this. A few years ago i was riding with a good friend, He was hit by a lady who ran a red light. "cops say she had to been going at least 60" his leg was severed on impact. he was in front of me and i saw the car and slammed on the breaks. I jumped off the bike just letting it smash on the ground. Ran over to him and instincts from everything I've seen is to stop the bleeding. took my belt and wrapped his leg. he died at the scene and it only took 8 mins for EMS to get there. Turns out "atleast what i was told", that both lungs were putncured by his ribs.

all remember was him coffing and chocking on blood. I think about it every time i hop on my bikes. there is no easy way to process what you have gone through but in time it will pass to sad memories. Just know you did what you could, It doesnt matter what the report says. You stepped up to the plate when needed and tried to get the man out. its unfortunate things like this happen but they do. nothing can stop it. just be proud you manned up when called upon.
