Thanks for the slander. There will always be an unsavory element around any military installation, looking to relieve the soldiers of their monthly pay checks. Don't blame the soldiers for what the local CIVILIANS are doing. Whores, pimps, drug dealers, scam artists, and street thugs preying on soldiers.

Drug dealers and pimps would go broke without customers…

Black Market commerce is the purest form of free market economy since it’s not regulated.

I’m a 28 year vet myself. It is a tough pill to swallow, but been true for centuries….

I went to an event with my spouse in the 700 Block area of Rancier in Killeen. That is a crazy dangerous area of Killeen. We got out at about 9:00-9:30 PM.

Lots of strange folks around there at night.

One guy with a backpack with machete strapped to it wanted to “ make contact “ so to speak.

I told my naive Filipino spouse to Go Go damn it. She as usual was slow and obstinate.

She is from a rough neighborhood in Mindanao and despite my explanation felt that she could manage things.

Next time one of my EDC pieces will be with me. Killeen is a rough town but even more so around Rancier.

    LESSON LEARNED!
Is it an EDC piece if you dont actually carry it?

They don't prey on soldiers... they provide exactly what they are asked for. It is decidedly mutual

I lived in Killeen for 7 years. Even had a shitty apartment off 10th and Rancier for a bit. Just wanted to save money and I didn't care about the area I lived in in my early 20's. I have some stories for sure from that area. From getting the door kicked in at my place by cops to drug dealer neighbors to gunfire at night. Hell I went down to the mailbox once and there was a body laying next to them. I kept a Saiga 12 on standby. After I left there I moved to a "bad" area in Austin. Everyone told me how bad it was and I shouldn't be there, but after 7 years in Killeen it was nothing to me.

When we were at Hood from ‘10-‘13, the III Corps and Ft Hood Warrant Roundup was a a routine event. The OPORD included a list of every military member and DA civilian with a known active warrant. Everything from unpaid parking tickets to murder and then some. Usually around 400 or so folks at any given time were on the list.

If somebody on the list didn’t turn themselves in, FRAGOs required the various commands escort these outstanding service members to one of the post theaters on a given day to have the warrant served.

I take the term EDC for what it is, Every Day Carry. You really can’t say “my EDC” gun if you don’t CED (carry every day).

Personally, I myself CED a knife, a light, a phone, a wallet, and keys. Working on base causes issues carrying guns every day, although there is a new process to do so that I need to look into. Big “mother may I” cluster but what I need to deal with…

This place is normal to me.
Born an Army Brat, all I have ever known is Army bases or towns. And never was much wanted by or fit in with a lot of civilians. I can't even remember a "good" civilian friend until I was in my 20s. And at my age and health, I'll die here. I'm good with that.
But I hold no illusions. It's gone downhill the last 30 years. Even some of the ladies at the dog park have been talking about getting armed.
But to be honest, it ain't just here. It's everywhere. The next 10 years is going to be interesting. And probably pretty sporty. If not sooner. Just a question of how and how bad.
Keep your powder dry folks. I'm thinking we'll need it.

This is me and my family next to our quarters at Camp Hood in 1946.
I’m the little shaver by my Dad.
Don’t really recall going off post any, so we didn’t worry about the locals.

Son in law is in the navy. They always live off base cause any housing near the base is the pits. I lived in base housing one time. It was OK but long ago. No doubt its pretty hairy now.

I rarely go to bad areas, especially at night.
I also rarely go anywhere without my EDC.

Of the two above statements, the first is the most effective in staying safe. The second is just incase the first one fails.
