i have a RRA AR15 flat top and i am interested in getting a good "tactical" scope for it. It hurts me too much at this point to fork over 1K for a ACOG. Could someone point me in the direction of a good scope that would work great on my rifle but wont crap out on me 6 months down the road. thanks

What are you looking to do with the gun? CQB, medium range, long range, multi task (CQB to nedium)...

Cant speak for the ACOG as I have little time behind one... not enough to make a complete evaluation. If you want to stay with a fixed poers scope like the ACOG, my only suggestion would be to go with one of the lower power ones 3x or less. If youre using it as a duty carbine in the city youre not going to be reaching out past 200 yds, heck youre most likely going to be well inside 100yds. I would bet that 75% or more of your time will be at CQB or slightly more. At those close ranges shooting with both eyes open is going to be a very handy thing. The higher the power the more difficult using both eyes becomes. For my eyes that limit is around 3X. Going past that gets goofy on me and shooting with both eyes open is troublesome.

I would go with either a good variable like the new Trijicon TR23 (I think) that has a 30mm tube with a true 1X to 4X coupled with a green triangle on post reticle set up. Gives you the ability to use with both eyes open at close ranges and bump up the power for better target ID or for the occasional longer range shots. These are slated for an MSPR of $750, so they may be cheaper than an ACOG. There are also many other 1-4 options out there the Trijicon is just one I have been contemplating for an SPR project.

Another option would be an Aimpoint of EOTech with a magnifier. LaRue and others make a flip mount for the magnifiers that lets you flip it off to a side when not in use and then quickly be able to bring it up behind the sight for a 3 or 4X magnification. Would give yuo a very good close range set up and a decent longer range one.

I have and like this setup, it works great for hunting. During the day, at longer distances, I use the magnifier behind the Eotech. At night or in denser areas, I flip the magnifier out of the way.

Welcome to the site Landin. First off, I would double check and see if your department has any regs or requirements when it comes to optics. I'm not LE so maybe that was a dumb or obvious statement for me to make but, I just thought I'd mention it as I've heard how anal retentive some departments can be about the simplest things sometimes so it's always good to cover your bases.

You might consider checking out GT Distributors in Austin:

GT Distributors - America's Law Enforcement supply specialist

They deal with LE a lot, so you should be able to get a decent discount.

wow thanks for all the suggestions. First i am keeping the fold down iron sights for sure not out of departmental requirements but out of personal preference second a friend lent me a 4X30 ACOG with the amber recticle. I mean its nice to look at but i dont see the 1000 bucks value it.
Thanks Sig and Taz for the ideas.

The Millett DMS scope on the top of page 2 has an illuminated reticle that resembles the EoTech sight, with a circle and a dot inside it. Also has cross hairs on sides and bottom. It will work well with the illumination turned off if you want to. These have an almost cultic following on AR15.com. I don't have one...............yet. Been thinking of getting one for either my AR or my Mini 14.

I have an RRA as well. Mine is the Entry Tactical model, 16" chrome lined with the 2 stage trigger and govt profile barrel. So far, I have set it up with an EoTech co-witnessed on a Dominator 2 mount; an Aimpoint Comp M3 with 2 moa dot co-witnessed with Troy Fold down sights; and thinking about trying the Millett DMS setup.

I'm not fickle, I just like to change shoes every now and then. BTW, I took a deer with a neck shot at about 60 yards a year ago with the EoTech setup using 62 grain Russian sp ammo. These guns are really good.

I just picked up a Milett DMS. Just couldnt justify the extra $600 for the Trijicon. Good looking scope for the price. Glass is clear and the reticle lights up well. Spare battery can be stored under the windage turret cap... Right now it sits atop my Mk12 Mod 1 upper since I moved my higher power scope over to the 308. Havent zerod it yet, but am planning on doing it this weekend. Just playing around it seems to work well at CQB ranges. At 1X its pretty much like a red dot, not as fast as my Aimpoint, but you can still get lined up on target pretty quick. At 4X you can ID target or engage at longer ranges. My only dislike for this scope, and the Trijicons is the lack of good ranging and hold over ability. Not really a huge issue for the carbine world, but more of a gripe for the SPR.

Also try Larue Tactical out in Leander. Best mounts, also sell Aimpoints, ACOGs, EoTechs etc..., and they might have LE discounts, just give them a call. Larue.com
