Can always try and make it to one of the two matches next month. Its a blast regardless of if you are good or not, and a great learning experience to boot.
There's a couple of local IDPA groups, and also 1 or 2 USPSA groups, as well as some steel matches that all get held locally. The nice thing is the schedules line up such that there is a match every other weekend, and sometimes nearly every weekend.
USPSA is definitely eye-opening. With IDPA, people can get along alright at slower speeds. The common misconception is that USPSA is all speed and sacrificing accuracy, but that's not the case. It's maintaining an acceptable level of accuracy for the given target constraints, while pushing maximum speed. Things are considerably faster in USPSA.
