Oh, what could possibly go wrong here ?

    >
"Government Wisdom" is quite the oxymoron.
Those in S.E. Texas need to know, or remember, these interesting situations:
Our government has either built or authorized the following, in one tiny area of our Nation, about one mile radius:
The very large oil refinery complex at Texas City.
The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway ("Intracoastal Canal")
One of the World's biggest compressed natural gas plants.
One of our two Military Bioweapons labs.
The entry to the USA's largest (by tonnage) seaport
A Medical School & multi-hospital complex and another large hospital
    A USCG Station
Do y'all think our enemies may have noticed this, too?
What could possibly go wrong there ?
Oh: ? Remember the Grandcamp ? It was the Nation's largest man made "disaster". Guess where it happened ? Right smack in the middle of all that !

Don't forget the PanTex Nuclear Weapons facility in Amarillo.

The last B-58 was dismantled there a few years ago. It was 9.1 megatons. Personally I don't think it should have been dismantled, I'd like to think we still have some megaton class weapons left, you know, just in case. They also store and upgrade weapons there, you don't want that place to be hit, lol.

BTW, if anyone is interested there is a calculator for nuke damage. You can select cities and yields in either kilo or megaton.

9.1 megatons over Dallas. I'm just outside of the blast zone, lol. Depending on the winds I wouldn't be lucky for long, there would be massive fallout from that yield.

I think we're all assuming that the Russian officers are insane and would push the button. Russian officers, not Americans, have prevented World War 3, not once BUT TWICE. Most famously Stanislav Petrov "the man who saved the world"

Guys, Putin might be a mad man as much as Joe is an imbecile, but I think the folks who have to do the button pushing are normal human beings who will think "if I do this the world ends, that's probably a bad idea"

And I'm pretty sure that, if Putin tried to launch, someone close to him would enact the Makarov Protocol.....

....nuclear war is bad for business, you know.....

Yes, but that plant is relatively isolated. Texas City is right in the big middle of all those critical enterprises.

And near our largest Southern City is but some 35 miles, much closer if one connsiders the burbs like Dickinson & LaMarque.

The fallout from all of the nuclear material stored there wouldn't make it isolated for long. That one facility would spread lethal fallout for thousands of miles. While the blast damage from a detonation is bad it's nothing compared to the damage from radioactive fallout. Post attack fallout would give you about a thirty minute life span. Fallout clouds from multiple detonations across the country would be lethal for months.

BTW, I used to collect Nuclear War stuff, weird I know, but I found it all fascinating. At one time I had a huge collection of attack handbooks that the government would issue to residents in the 50's-60's. A few years ago I sold it all on e-Bay and made out with about $350.00, a great investment it turned out to be. I scanned most of the handbooks and instrument tech literature, here's some for your reading enjoyment.

I still have functional equipment on hand, some of it rare like this decked out Lionel CDV-700 with CDV-705 loud speaker.

Don't forget your family dosimeter kit. I did end up selling this one.

I won't get a direct hit unless something really gets screwed up, but I could catch fallout from either San Antonio or Laughlin AFB, depending on the winds...

But, while it might be possible to predict how extensive a nuclear exchange could be, it's not possible to predict how limited...

I'm not going to check out just because a couple nukes get blown, but I do like the idea of being able to measure radiation levels so I do know when it's time. Even sick is not necessarily reason enough, as far as I'm concerned, but that would be a good indicator.
