IPHONE creepy but very cool tool

Found this out yesterday. It’s pretty useful. My boy and I went for a walk yesterday and I researched all kinds of plants. It’s my understanding not all iPhones have this capability.

Take a picture of plant

Click on the info symbol with stars. Then click on look up plant.

How cool is that? Can’t believe I just found this out please tell me I’m not alone…

There's an app called PictureThis that will identify plants and any issues with the plant.

Yeah, I've seen some of those apps. I'm not an app guy and keep my phone clear of apps. Didn't realize it was built in.

Google Lens will identify plants and a bunch of other things, too. I have it disabled on my phone as you can't trust it to only be helpful and not spyware

I have Leaf Snap on the Samsung and it does a pretty good job of identifying plants. They do put in lots of ads unless you pay.

Sounds about right. crApple often releases "groundbreaking and highly innovative" features that they stole from other manufacturers. But hey, if their fan base buys it (pun intended), why should I care? Free world and all.
Finally found the commercial I had been looking for for a few months. It is 10 years old and still valid. Because crApple STILL does not have those features. LOL

My Android phone can identify items from the camera and do a Google search. Stepson sent a picture of a bicycle he bought to my phone, I used my Android tablet to identify it, even told me what they sell for.

I have Merlin Bird ID that tells me what bird I have in my photo. It identifies all ducks, songbirds, water birds, woodpeckers, etc. I use it in my photography.

I develop for both platforms. Here's my takeaway based on doing this for about 10 years now.

Android races to be the first. Apple races to be the best.

Of course not universally true, but it's close. There's a lot of platform differences of course, and I can go down that rabbit hole with y'all if anyone is curious.

Both platforms embed location data, both allow you to turn it off. Apple does a better job of stripping the EXIF data on export though.

Quite a few apps that you can do this on. Also have ones that will ID bugs to.
