This will be interesting when it starts trapping teenagers consensually sending pics of their junk to each other.

And of course adults like weiner, fired fox anchors etc and will not be thrilled either...

    Can’t read without an account.

My guess is that this is cloud related?

On it's face, it seems like a good cause. Here's my issue: I don't trust big tech to figure out what a "violation" looks like. They will censor folks for posting truth. FB and Twitter will addd snarky comments about information they don't like, saying it's "not been fact checked" or some such nonsense. I left those platforms before they got really bad, so it's a distant memory now.

But I know I don't need them digging into my stuff and deciding what is "good" and "bad".

PS - I do not own any Apple products.
SIMPLE! Apple sells your information- period! Live with or go somewhere else!

Okay - so no one has brought up the big elephant in the room - for the server to be able to scan and "match" photos - that means Apple has a server full of kiddie porn to check against. How is this allowed to be? Because they claim its for the good of the people? Someone somewhere has to be manually inputting images, which means they have access to the images. If one person does, multiple people could or do. So by admitting to this massive breach of privacy, they're admitting they've got servers full of kiddie porn as well.

This will be interesting when it starts trapping teenagers consensually sending pics of their junk to each other.

And of course adults like weiner, fired fox anchors etc and will not be thrilled either...
According to The Guardian article, the tool only looks for images that are already in the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s database.

"Apple has announced impending changes to its operating systems ..."
That sounds like they have not pushed the spyware onto people's gaiPhones yet.
Also, crApple's "think different" wording sounds a lot like the usual progressive propaganda. We all know crApple is so far left, it's falling of the left edge of our Earth disc. I've been waiting for them to make a public step in the left direction and start oppressing their users openly. And it finally happened. It was only a matter of time because they came up with intrusive censorship.

FWIW, the original article mentions only gaiPhones, not tablets. Will their tablets be included in this spy operation as well?

Think different is a pretty old slogan. Don’t know if they were “woke” in the 80s (maybe earlier) but I’m pretty sure it’s just hanging around out of tradition.

    Probably be gone before long.

    From the epoch article:

“This innovative new technology allows Apple to provide valuable and actionable information to [the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children] and law enforcement regarding the proliferation of known CSAM,” said the company, referring to an acronym for child sexual abuse material. “And it does so while providing significant privacy benefits over existing techniques since Apple only learns about users’ photos if they have a collection of known CSAM in their iCloud Photos account. Even in these cases, Apple only learns about images that match known CSAM.”

So Apple has a stash of kiddie porn in their servers that Siri compares your images to once you try to upload to iCloud?? WTF how is that even legal? Or are they comparing g your images to missing kids database.

I originally went with an iphone over android because I didn't want all my digital eggs in one basket. I used gmail/docs for years.
I realize it all falls under the NSA's net, but all the "phone home" features in Android seemed pretty invasive.

While searching for an iphone alternative I've looked a "De-Googled" phones, but there's not a lot of solid alternatives in the smart phone world for people.

Has anyone found decent smart phones that don't transmit buckets of data back to the mother ship?

My iphone 6 is dying, so I just ordered a cheap iPhone XR to get me through.
My plan is to put nothing but essentials on it.

I backup my photos to Dropbox because they "encrypt at rest" and I've used the system restore to recover from three computer failures over the years.

    Unfortunately, privacy is nearly extinct.

I’ve read about more than a few folks who only rely on flip phones with batteries that can physically be removed.

But any smartphone is a little spy. It’s part of the OS. Unlike a computer running Linux as an example, I’m not aware of an open source OS for smartphones.

List of open source mobile phones

There's also the option of taking a more commodity Android phone with an unlocked bootloader and playing with it (AOSP, etc.).

Ultimately the frustrations involved usually drive people back to a packaged/maintained option from one of the big players.

The assumption should always be made that you have absolutely zero privacy on the internet or on a cell phone

Very true, because even with the most secure device you're still 'sharing' plenty of information by using the network.

The only winning move is not to play.

There is no scenario where .gov cannot track and ID you if you are a normal person. You can beat a lot of .com, but not .gov.

There are some Linux phone projects, but still very geeky. I'm hopeful.
I used to be able to find dumb phones with slide out keyboards to make texting reasonable, but those seem hard to find these days.

I'm leaning toward a de-googled solution so apps like Signal or Telegram will still run.

Any more development? When is the crApple spyPhone update coming out?

I was thinking about it and have an important question: when their "perfect" algorithm finds a hit/match, what then?
First of all, every man-made thing is flawed, especially something as hodge-podge as woke libtard stuff that needs to be rolled out asap "for safety". So let's make an important assumption that the algorithm will be flawed.
Now when it happens to match a picture on your spyPhone, what will crApple do?
Will they upload your picture to their servers for their viewing pleasures (won't surprise me)?
Will they erase your phone "for safety"?
    Will they terminate your account?
Will they report you to the authorities and send black helicopters?
Will they report it to fascistBook who will kill your account but not before it is labeled as "pervert"?

I do not own a spyPhone so I don't care. But I am really curious about the actual follow-through on this one.
Another half-assed hare-brained solution in search of a problem.

    I've never owned a so-called smart phone.

They're not a required item in my world.
    You, sir, are lucky.
I have a cheap smartphone for travel.
But I also carry my old flip phone. Just to screw with people. :D
Checking in at the doctor's office, for example, they tell me to download "the" app, scan some Q code on the front door, fill out some forms and pay online.
I pull out my flip phone (which I carry JUST for that reason), they notice my grey hair, hand me the paper forms and they finally STFU and do their damn job. It is incredible what a piece of technology in your pocket can do for you. ;)

Within just a few short years, the older flip phones, will be obsolete, as they stop supporting them on the networks. Enjoy them while you can, because pretty soon, they are going to totally useless for anything.
