You might as well start the discussion on BOS or no BOS.

I personally like the BOS since no other faction has proven able or willing to give the wasteland the security or structure it needs.

We must however determine if we are talking about east or west coast BOS, since though they share the sane name, and effectively the same Chain Of Command (COC), each chapter is effectively it's own faction. In FNV, the BOS is an extremely xenophobic small hidden chapter that has no major contribution to the story.

In FO3, the BOS play a main part of the story. They (with the players help) defeat the enclave and help purify the Potomac.

In FO4, the BOS is totally militarized and are in Boston expressly to destroy the institute.

It's easy to dismiss the BOS as fascists, but they are in a post apocalyptic world caused by science run amok. Super mutants, vault tecs terrible experiments, ghouls are all horrifying things created by unchecked pre-war scientists.

So yes, the BOS is necessary.
