I'm in the same boat, would love to get peoples' opinions.

Also, are the punches and magwell vise block really necessary? I've tore down and reassembled other guns with a hammer, small screwdrivers and a little tape without messing up the finishes.

I was just going to get a wrench like this and improvise the rest...

I am surprised that they left out a handguard removal tool. That is one of the most used items I have. Don't have a mag block, been able to get by without one. I just bought a punch set from a hardware store, and the screwdriver set I use has all those allen wrench bits, and a boat load more different sizes.

Personally I would look at this as a good all around starter set.

Pachmayr Screw Driver Set - $10
    31-Piece Professional Gunsmith Screwdriver Set

Set of Punches and a brass hammer - $20
Hammer Interchangeable Brass Nylon Steel Heads Punch Set 7-Piece

    AR Multi Tool - $8.50
    Multi-Tool AR-15 Mil-Spec Steel

Get a more expensive, bigger one like shown above if you anticipate changing barrels. This cheap one will handle stocks and flash hiders.

    Handguard Tool - $16
Handguard Removal Tool AR-15 Synthetic Black

    Pivot Pin Tool - $4
Pivot Pin Detent Installation Tool AR-15

This ought to get you a long way down the road to having the tools you need for an AR build for around $60.

Optional, but really helps on a number of gun related projects, a bench block. - $15

Not recommending you buy those exact items listed. I just hit the Midway site for some quick look ups. A set of similar tools I think is very handy to have, and would get you through a lot of different gun related projects. The rest like needle nose pliers, knife, tape, and some other normal house hold items you probably have already in your tool box.

That looks like a decent kit for soley doing AR's. I wanted a full set of the roll pin punches & roll pin starters and get a set from Brownells. Other than that, you'd be good to go with that kit. In the end it was surprisingly easy to build the lower, took about half an hour?
