Just out of curiosity but, doesn't OSHA have a few things to say about the situation as well. I thought there was a provision by them somewhere that requires a minimum full 30 minute lunch in an a 8 hour day. I may have mis-read it though.

No, there is no OSHA enforced rule or law regarding lunch breaks.

    Ok, now I'm real curious.

Every place I have ever worked has been adamant about clocking out and taking a half hour for lunch. Why?

    From your second link,

Yes, I did find it enlightening.

As far as why they do it, well perhaps it could depend on where the company is based.
My company is headquartered in Illinois and the policy they follow seems to be in line with Illinois state law.
But, that's just me guessing at why they do what they do. I have no hard facts.

You would have to ask them. We can guess. Take one of those jobs and answer what shift did you work? For example, were you scheduled 8 to 5? 9 to 5?

    I will go with 7a-330p.

I could see it as a way to avoid 2.5 hrs of overtime, but we run overtime anyways. Total hours are work load dependent, not scheduled.
