After reading the criteria for licensing private firearms in Israel I think it would be easier in a 'may-issue' location such as New York City or LA to compare countries. NOTE: when you click on the link you will probably get the Hebrew version. Translation from Hebrew to English is available using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers. I wasn't able to find the translate button using Mozilla Firefox.)

I can understand the requirement to be a citizen and proficiency in Hebrew but all the rest makes it really tough. And then one is limited in number of firearms and ammo.

Often I have read about Israeli self-defense measures but didn't realize it was so limited to just a few 'good guys/gals' and government blessing.

Europe was settled by the sword. The U.S. was settled by the gun. That is the big difference in attitudes towards firearms . Carrying that thought further, probably 99% of the world was settled by swords and blades.

However one might include Isreal in the settled by guns group because of their having to fight to keep it even as it was being founded.

Israel is a mess about guns. Jews, historically, have been barred possession and use of arms, so there isn't a historic 'gun culture' there. Then there's the fact that Israel operates under 'Basic Law' - which is derived heavily from English Common Law that was in place in 1948 - and the early (socialist) government wanted to disarm competing factions as quickly as possible. The is most visible in the Altalena Affair, where the Haganah (forerunner to the modern IDF), including future Prime Minister Yitzhack Rabin, attacked an arms-laden refugee ship and murdered not only militants but Jewish refugees because it was operating under the auspices of the Irgun (Etzel) - led by future Prime Minister Menachem Begin.

    Eli,

"attacked an arms-laden refugee ship and murdered not only militants but Jewish refugees because it was operating under the auspices of the Irgun (Etzel) - led by future Prime Minister Menachem Begin."

    Please, if you will, elaborate.

Why would they murder the Jewish refugees?

I thought Rabin and Begin were considered heroes of early Israel...no?

There were 2 competing militant factions, one Left and one Right. The Haganah ('Defense') was the Leftist group, what is known in English as the Irgun (literally 'Organization' - short for Irgun Tz’va’i Leumi and commonly called by acronym Etzel in Hebrew) was the Rightist group. It was the Etzel that drove the British out with a 'Price Tag' retribution policy against the British (and arabs) and the King David Hotel bombing.
After the Rightist Etzel succeeded in driving the British out, the Leftist Haganah immediately attacked the Etzel! This had the immediate effect of the loss of historically Jewish East Jerusalem (directly due to Rabin's incompetence and alcoholism), and numerous other losses. The Haganah had no interest in fighting for Israel's future, they only had interest in gaining and maintaining power.
The Altalena, laden with refugees, contained arms for the Etzel; the Haganah attacked it to prevent the Etzel from gaining strength - diverting valuable resources from the front and creating distrust and disunity that continued for years - largely until the election of Menachem Begin as Prime Minister nearly 30 years later in 1977.
I have read in the past that Rabin horrified fellow guests at a White House dinner in the early '90s when he bragged about himself shooting refugees off the deck of the Altalena!
It's only been in recent years that the Israeli government has referred to the incident as criminal and the deaths as murders; Israeli history books are startlingly left-wing and generally portray Rightist groups like Etzel as aggressors and Leftists like the Haganah and 'peacemaker' Rabin as heros.

With the Oct 7th 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas from Gaza a few good guys/gals with guns could have fought back in some situations that I saw on X (Twitter). Too bad Israel had so much civilian disarmament. The IDF is minutes away when seconds count.

But Israel is so safe! They don't have school shootings because of all the military people walking around with guns (said with the sarcasm that it is).

Israel used to have more lenient gun laws, but in the wake of the killing of Yitzhak Rabin (may his name and entire bloodline be obliterated and forgotten), the left didn't let a crisis go to waste and instituted radical gun control.
There is a burgeoning black market for illicit firearms - ironically largely sourced from arabs - which I expect to grow substantially in the wake of recent events. Who cares about Israeli prisons, with air conditioning and weekend furloughs, when your family is facing annihilation?

Israel not allowing their 'citizens' to protect themselves with guns is idiotic.

So Israel would rather have their citizens die at the hands of fanatics then let them protect themselves...are you serious?

Makes me think Israel is being led by politician's like newsom...

My sympathies for Israel has taken a huge nose dive.
