Youngest old man on TGT.
I don't know if I just got lucky or what, but I just won an auction for this for a pretty great price, and there was no competition for it.
It's a Model 1868 Springfield Trapdoor in 50-70, circa 1869. From what I understand, this was the third of the Allan conversion models, and the first to use a receiver instead of a modified barrel, and the first to use a solid 50 cal barrel instead of a 58 cal one that had a 50 cal liner installed. It still used some parts from the tons of Model 1863 Springfield rifles that were lying around after the Civil War. It was the blueprint for the Trapdoor as we know it today.
These weren't in service long. When the 45-70 was adopted in 1873, some of these were issued to Indian scouts, but the vast majority were sold off as surplus, often to buffalo hunters.
I can't wait to get it, and put a few rounds through it.
