Since January I have been trying to get myself into better shape. I have been in the gym 4 to 5 days a week, and have lost around 20 pounds so far. Until recently knee pain hasn't been an issue. I jogged close to 2.5 miles on friday and work saturday with a dull anoying ache. I didn't run again until after last nights work out, and the ache today is much worse.
So my question. Other than rest, how can I get some relief? Or am I just a big baby? hehe

    Thanks!

Something il add. My knees pop everytime I transfer weight off of them.

At 45 I developed arthritis in both knees, just like my dad.
It limits what I can do and tells me when I over-do.

An NSAID helps with the discomfort. But, long-term, it has its down side.

Try to go with low impact workouts on some days. Bicycling is one idea. You MAY be able to use those compression deals on your knee-depending on the type of pain.

Your bed may be the problem. I had knee pain and of course my mind goes to degenerative bone disease or cancer, talked to my dr about it, he recommended I change mattresses, I did, problem solved.

Two things you didn't mention are your age and weight. Being overweight is a knee-killer. After a VERY long life of playing Rugby, Hockey, down-hill skiing, sky-diving, and time in the military my knees were worn out and so sore that I quit jogging in 2010. I started gaining weight which exacerbated the problem with my knees to the point I went to see a Rheumatologist who told me I had Osteo-arthritis and to LOSE WEIGHT! I was 251lbs so I went on a diet and I lost 32 lbs. The doctor also prescribed Meloxicam which was extremely effective in controlling my joint inflammation and pain but unfortunately raised my blood pressure so I switched to occassionally using Tramadol for pain and Voltaren gel to ease inflammation. I'm back jogging 3 miles a day and though my knees still hurt somewhat, I tough it out. The most effective action I took though was losing weight. If you're losing weight then you're on the right track, my friend.

Agree. Look for a supportive, yet flexible wrap/brace that you can use while working out. CVS has some pretty decent ones IIRC

Also look into a very good quality of running and walking shoe. Quality foam inserts can help too. The better quality shoes i have, the more my knee braces stay on the shelf. Humans were not designed to walk or run on hard flat surfaces.

If you're a vet-the VA gives out some pretty nice boot inserts. I know they probably won't help for workouts, but they've REALLY helped out my knees and lower back when I'm on my feet all day.

I'm a large guy, too and at 65, my knees just gave it up. I attended an Appleseed shoot, spent 9 hours on my knees and it crippled me up.

I started riding a tricycle that I bought from Wally World. That trike is 6 feet long and is fun to ride. I even put my little dog, Jake in the rear basket. I worked those damaged knees back to full operation and rode bicycles 3,414 miles in 2011. I logged every mile of that 3,000 miles on TGT.

Well...that craziness broke my butt. The knees were great and the butt was broken. I'll spare you the details but I was in intense pain! After 2 years, I'm just now getting back to the bicycles and will use MODERATION from now on.

Summed up, the bicycles fixed my knees. Think about it....when you walk, your knees take a 300+ pound load. On a bicycle, that knee load is about 60 pounds. It makes sense!

I'll second the right kind of inserts in your shoes. A knee brace is nice, but don't overlook the old fashioned ace bandage. Those things work well too.

It may sound kinda crazy, but I found that cutting my sugar intake helped my knee pain a lot. Sugar, among other things, is an "inflammatory food," and will aggravate arthritis symptoms.

I still get hellaciously sore after a run, but not anywhere near as bad as when I was going hog stompin' wild with my sugar intake.

Plus, cutting sugar will make it easier to lose weight by default, and that'll help take some of the pressure off your knees, too.

+1. Sugar feeds so many unhealthy microbes in your gut, Those microbes give off toxins.

I've had great results with Glucosamine.

Copied from WebMD: "Glucosamine helps keep the cartilage in joints healthy. But natural glucosamine levels drop as people age. This can lead to gradual deterioration of the joint,"

My chronic knee pain is arthritis. Then there is the other issue with the fact that I grew too much, too fast during my youth. Then I became a truck driver and gained some weight. My knees felt terrible once I went over 220lbs. Since then, though, I've been able to keep my weight between 190 and 200. I still consume lots of sugar.
