I believe he had said it was his friend. Many helmets come with bluetooth nowadays.

Well he kept calling him "hey kid" so I figured they only loosely knew each other. Like they had just met up to ride together with other folks.

Definitely a headset in the helmet, but I was wondering if they were using an app similar to Zello or a radio. 15 years ago I would have guessed CB, but no one uses it anymore.

Some helmets have it built in, all they need is a cellphone to pair up.
