I'm trying to decide what my first handgun is going to be. I've shot quite a few handguns but the ones I like the most were the Glock 17 and the Sig P226. The Sig being the more accurate out of the two. But one thing my budget doesn't seem to be cooperating with me. lol So I looked into buying a Taurus 24/7 Pro.(because I do have the $$ for the Taurus) I haven't gotten my chl yet, so it's going to be a home defense gun for now.
    ?any advice?

If you can afford the Taurus, you can surely afford a g17 right? I've never shot the 24/7, read some a really good reviews on them and wouldnt mind having one, but thing about the glock is...well its a glock . every man, woman, and chi... everyone should own atleast one glock.

    Everyone!

I would definitely look into a used Glock...there are always good deals going on them!

Sig also offers a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) program. I have picked up a couple this way for the same money as a new Glock. My dealer had a P226 9mm 2 weeks ago for $525. These guns are factory reconditioned and quite often refinished in their Nitron finish and virtually indistinguishable from a new gun. Just a little food for thought.

If you look around hard enough, you can find used Glocks around $350, and as far as used guns go they are much more likely to still be plenty reliable.

That is an excellent suggestion. Those CPO's are almost indistinguishable from new, and I've seen P226 CPOs around the $550 price range.

I agree Glocks are good, but I know a few people with the 24/7 who love it. I'd go Taurus for now and buy the Glock later, doubt it will be your last gun...

The SIG P226 and Glock 17 are two of the best "service" sized 9mms going. Others in my "best service 9mms" list would be the FN Hi-Power, CZ-75 and Beretta 92FS. Pick any of those and you'll probably be very happy. I'd also think that the XD-9 and M&P 9 would also be contenders.

Taurus? Well, if you were looking at their PT92 Beretta copy, I'd say thats a fair buy. However, I have noticed that the QC varies wildly with just about every other model they bring out.

For the price of a new Taurus 24-7, you can probably pikc up a nice used Glock 17 or SIG P226 police trade in and have MUCH better chances of getting a quality pistol you can rely on.

If you want to move up in calibers, Summit Gun Broker is selling factory re-furbed Glock 22s with 2 15rd mags and night sights for 349 bucks. Thats a heck of a deal on what is probably the most popular police issue pistol in the country. I have an older Glock 22 and it is VERY reliable and I would bet my life on it.

Look around...there are better choices than the Taurus.

I would go with whatever you can get a good deal on. Make sure you have shot the firearm first, as comfort and accuracy trumps all opinion and advice.

Will this gun be your carry piece eventually? If so I'd go with the glock 19 instead of the 17. Its quite different dimension wise and much more concealable in my opinion.

Home defense gun? Get something you are comforable and accurate with. Make sure you can afford the ammo to get proficient with it too! If you find a handgun that "speaks" to you or otherwise feels natural, run with it. Even if you end up not enjoying your purchase, firearms hold their value very well.

A Taurus has no re-sale value. You wont lose money on a Glock or Sig. If 350 is your budget, look for a used XD or Ruger. You will fare better.
Hell, Im just gonna say it.... dont buy a Taurus.

You might also want to look at the "Stoeger" and "CZ" line of 9mm's, they are decent guns and are relatively inexpensive nib.

+1 on the Stoeger and CZ

I just recently picked up a Cougar 8000 and could not be happier.

Sweetest shooting 9mm I have ever shot.
