I'm moving the 4-12x Vortex I have on my AR-15 to a future bolt action rifle so I need to replace it

    Looking at a 1-6x24 or 1-8x24, what distance are they designed for ... 100, 200, 300 yards?

Wondering if the 3-12, 4-16 scopes are to much for a AR rifle

Magnification really depends on what you actually use the gun for. I mainly use my AR's for hunting and precision target shooting, so I have many different magnification ranges on my gun's.
I have 2-10x, 3-15x, 4-16x, 6-24x, and 4.5-29x on most of mine, but I also shoot several of them out to 600+ yards regularly

Like Txhillbilly said, it depends on what you want to do with the rifle. I tend to go with LPVOs on my ARs since they can be used at really close range distances like a red dot, but gives you the option of higher magnification for longer range shots. Mine are all 1-6x. There's no reason why you couldn't make accurate hits at 300 yards with either a 1-6x or 1-8x. Heck, if your eyes are good, you could probably double that distance without too much trouble.

What are you wanting to use the AR for? Home defense, hunting, moderately long range shooting, or something else?

What caliber is it and what are you going do with it?

    For scoped AR's I have:
-Diamondback 3-9 x 40 on one 5.56 (do it all, sort of)
-Diamondback 3-9 x 40 on the .450BM (short range hammer, I got a great deal when I bought the other one so I bought 2, might be swapped for open sights soon)
    -Diamondback 4-16 x 42 on another 5.56 (medium to long-ish precision)
    -Diamondback 4-16 x 42 on the .224V (long precision)

**edit**None of these are worth a damn for quick acquisition at close range (like 15yd and under), great for everything else.**

When I shot a lot of 3gun. I had no problems out to 600yards with a 1-6x. If you have the money I'd go with the Vortex with the JM-1 BDC Reticle. Most guys say it's spot on for all the subtensions. You maybe able to find the non E model for around $1k used in todays market

Depends on what you use the gun for, i have a tasco 10x super sniper that floats around when I want to see how well a gun will actually shoot, and i used to use an old Bushnell 4-12 for this.

LPVO's are very flexible, but on the higher end of their magnification, their eye boxes get tight, and 1x is never truly 1x. Good ones are expensive, and they all tend to be heavy.

I am a big fan of ACOG's, and the higher magnification ones have great BDC's that makes getting hits at longer range easy

A friend is trying to get me to go hog hunting with him

With the 4-12x I know I could hit one up to 400 yards, but it's not on the AR anymore

Very much a function of reticle design and somewhat dependent on fixe or variable power magnification and what level(s) of magnification are used.

A 4x ACOG with the TA-31 reticle can be used to accurately range and engage with 5.56 an average adult-sized human out to 600+ yards. That may not be the optimum reticle or magnification for a hog.

Also .. I'm retired so the budget is 150.00
Decent 1-6x LPVOs start at like $350+

For your budget, I'd either go with a cheap Vortex crossfire II, or a cheap red dot. If you don't ever plan on shooting any closer than 50 yards, go with the scope.

    Amazon product ASIN B00794LJ64
Holosun and Vortex both make red dots near $150.

if you can, save up for awhile so you can get something better.

You aren't going to get anything good for that price. Even Vortex's crossfire 1-4 is at least $200
You can get the Vortex Crossfire 1-4x24 for the 40% off MSRP (MSRP = $289.99). That makes the sale price $173.99. Of course you need to add $10.00 shipping and then state tax and a $2.00 fee they charge (which puts it at about $201.00 total where I live). Still a good deal, the same scope elsewhere on line routinely sells for $199.00 plus shipping & tax. Even with free shipping, the tax puts it above the price you get through ExpertVoice.

Also .. I'm retired so the budget is 150.00

To the OP, of course, if you are hoping to get something like a low end Vortex (as opposed to their mid to high end items) at $150 or less including the price, shipping & tax included, I guess the Vortex lifetime warranty will not come with whatever scope you select. They have an excellent warranty and replaced a pair of binoculars that were over a decade old on which the piece that held one end of the strap in place had broken off. The binos were issued to me on my job and I was allowed to keep them. I did not buy them, did not have a receipt or any proof of purchase; yet, Vortex had me send them in and replaced them with the same model. I am retired too and my wife gets 40% of my pension. Yet, think it is well worth a little more to get that warranty. Good luck with your search.

If you are going to go Walmart, look at the Simmons 22 mag 3-9. Few dollars more and not to bad a scope. Paralax can be bad though.
For $150 or less, look on Amazon for the Athlon Neos or Talos lines. I have several and for the money they are hard to beat.
