I have a cheap UTG red dot on it now and looking for an upgrade to maybe a Vortex.
Working with a budget of $300 max, what would you do?

I'd keep the cheap one on it.
I doubt you'll gain much no matter what you spend.
Seems like every time I need that damn thing to work , the batteries are dead. I was thinking maybe a new one wouldn’t drain batteries so bad

    Well, that sucks then.
My Aimpoint PRO on my AR has an insane battery life, even if you leave it on. It has to do with the circuit design so I was just looking for something in between

Been really happy with the $179 PA micro I got a few years ago. Still on the original battery, but it doesn’t get daily use. Hasn’t drained in storage though.

Was using it to but rabbits on my Buck Mark a couple months ago and managed to tag a couple at 75-100 yards.

I am a big fan of the Vortex Strikefire II. It's well made and rugged. I also have a Sparc AR. It's ok. The buttons are a little harder to push than I think would be reasonable, and the rubber eye cap thingy is just stupid and in the way. Luckily, that can just be pulled right off. I have no issues with how it functions, and I otherwise like it. It's also pretty small and light.

I'm about to order a Holosun HS503CU. It has a lot of really cool features, it's solar powered so you're not always draining the battery, and I have heard nothing but good about them from those who actually use their gear in ways that it's not always gentle and on a clean range.

If you have astigmatism you will not get the full benefit of a red dot. It will look like a blurry star. By purchasing a prism type red-dot scope, you will always have a clear sharp dot. Vortex makes the Spitfire prism type in 1x and in 3x. Personally I like the Vortex Strike Eagle. It is a true both eyes open 1x, but also up to 8x when you need a little help with older eyes like mine...

I like my Vortex Sparc II. No silly rubber cap like on the Sparc AR and the lens covers can be removed completely. Not bad for the price point. I have astigmatism and the dot is a little fuzzy but still serviceable.

Next RDS I'm getting will be Trijicon or Aimpoint though.

I have seen the PROs go for $300 used. You'd be hard pressed to beat that in your budget especially since you already have one.

Primary Arms and Vortex make good stuff as well for a bit cheaper.

But in your shoes I'd definitely get another PRO.
