    What caliber?

To 400 yards you need good magnification and some clarity and a stable base. You can get less expensive but you loose some of those attributes.

Any scope you get that can see past 400 yards is going to be pricey.

Past 400 yards and you need to start paying for magnification, clarity and have a rock solid base with few compromises in any of those areas.

In Houston Texas there won't be many days you can use more than 60x due to heat and humidity during daylight.

True thanks for the info buddy. I am doing most of my long range shooting in huntsville at my property, but i am needing some equipment. I already have targets ranged and made but i am just looking for some basic equipment. I am doing this because I am wanting to find groups people that are responsible and mature that would like to do distance shooting with no cost at my place.

Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85mm is getting good reviews. For the features it has I'd say it's a great value for the distance you're planning.

I've been more than impressed with their binoculars as well.

Here's an idea... for about the same price how about a remote (wired or wireless) video camera setup on the target?

Added bonus of taking video of the shots taken.

$1000 would go a ways to making that possible.

Good idea, but kinda out of the question depending on power source locations. my laptop gets 2hrs of use alone on the battery, and most of the time if im doing any long range stuff im out there for 4hrs or more
