Looking at a S&W m&p15orc. This would be my first EBR and i am looking at something for range use for plinking and also for home defense, i have plenty of other rifles for hunting purposes. I was also thinking of trying to pick up a DPMS or Bushy lower for a later build, maybe a Stag arms. Would this be an ok purchase for an entry level or am i way off base?:1zhelp:

All of the items you mentioned are fine for a newbie.....or a more experienced person. They are all decent products for plinking and hiding around the house.

I've a S&W M&P-15 with the detachable upper and gas block front site, it's been a fine rifle.

Update:
Well they sold the M&P15 before i could get back over there with some cash so i ended up with a Bushmaster XM15. I was really looking for a flat top but i am happy with my first black rifle and i can always upgrade it, change uppers later when i want. Thanks everyone for steering a noob in the right direction.
