Gasoline is the easy way. Hot water doesn't work.
    Hot gasoline, maybe?
I remember as a young student coming across the "boiling point" value of gasoline (104 to 392F, depending on the blend; I had to look it up).
Even though I was a budding pyromaniac, that sounded dangerous.

104F is ambient air temp some places in summer. Not Texas of course.

I am just a cop, not a fire fighter, but I am pretty sure a barrel of "hot gasoline" sitting atop a fire would be a bad idea...

    Nope. Use the right blend.
    And no smoking.

ETA: Disclaimer: That was sarcasm/humor. See post #16. Do not try this at home. You are better off dropping the frozen turkey into your outdoor fryer in November.

OP have you ever cleaned cosmoline out of a weapon?
    It sux.
The guys in the pics are wearing jackets so it must of been cold that day.
Cold hard frozen cosomoline sucks even worse than hot day cosomoline. It sux x 2.

I like Cold Weather...The Colder the Better at our Ranch during Hunting Season if we get Lucky enough. I Really like M1 Carbines and after all that Free I would of knowneven more. There's nothing wrong with a little hard work, did the most of my Life.

I never experienced cosmoline myself but the only good thing I ever heard about it was that it did the job of protecting the metal. Otherwise most of what I heard about it was not repeatable.
