I'm purchasing a Tavor SAR flattop for the house. I do have an M1 carbine and it's a great rifle but it's not totally reliable and I don't want to have it as my only home defense rifle. I'm torn about the optic. I'd like to keep the cost around $600 or less. Any recommendations for an always ready optic?

Tavor SAR has foldable iron sights. Magnified sight on such a fine weapon is my recommendation. Vortex Strike Eagle is 1-8x with a true 1x that is essentially a RDS.
Have one on an SBR and it works great.

    For my non-magnified optics:
Aimpoint Pro for home defense, I run it on my suppressed SBR. This is my go-to SHTF rifle.
And I run a Sig Romeo 5 on my 300BLK pistol.

But my favorite optic is a Steiner P4xi, 1-4x. I have it on an AR.
LPVO’s are sort of the best of both worlds.
1x dot for close quarters, plus some magnification when needed...great for the range.

Have an opinion on which one and why for primarily a defensive role and some fun at the range?
Micro for close work. Small, lightweight option. For close and longer you are looking at a 1-4 or 1-6 and my vote is Vortex for the money, but now you are moving beyond small and lightweight.

Probably go with a PRO for defensive role.

Range fun you would probably want magnification, which your options are limitless.

My big concern with the LPVO is that it is not an always on option. You have to activate illumination prior to use.

$600 also doesn't seem to quite cover the LPVO options well. The strike eagle and viper gen II are in there. Maybe a used one

That being said your iron sights will serve the purpose. A rifle is just point and shoot at most in house distances.

Shopping PRO. Stays on constantly for a long time. in home defense, you wouldn't need magnification. If one can't hit a man sized target with it at 100 yards, they need to practice more.

Pros and cons to ffp vs sfp on a lpvo?
I get that ffp will magnify with the increase from 1-6 and sfp will stay the same. Is there benefit to one or the other as you increase mag?

Yeah, I would like my irons to cowitness if it's a dot, either in line or 1/3. I don't know if it works like that with lpvo, but I assume it would if it's lined up and at 1 power
