Off body carry is almost universally condemned for good reasons.

However, I used to own (it got lost in a move) a man purse that worked beautifully. The clutch-style bag had a velcro closure over the gun opening that covered the entire length of the short end of the bag. It came with a lanyard that could be clipped to a lanyard loop on the pistol. It also came with a velcro-secured grip wrap-around that was attached to a lanyard.

In practice, you attached the lanyard to the firearm, put the loop around your wrist, then placed the firearm in the bag. As long as the lanyard was around your wrist you were holding the gun in the palm of your hand at all times. All you had to do to place the bare pistol in your hand for firing was to pull away the clutch. If a no-good-nik on the street hit you with a "purse-snatching", they would actually put your pistol in your hand and aim it at themselves automatically.

I thought it was a great carry concept for offbody work back when everybody seemed to be using those slow (and obvious) fanny packs.

Not only might I occasionally use such a thing there are also a number of women to whom I'd recommend it. Unfortunately, I've looked all over the place (online, local gun shows, big trade shows, etc.) over the last couple of years and not been able to find anything like this.

Has anyone recently seen anything like I've described?

Maxpedition has some great bags and almost all of them feature a secret Velcro enclosed pocket for ccw.

I carried the Dillon attaché case for a couple years.
    Very discreet office carry.

Maxpedition Versipacks for me. They wear like iron and you can customise them with all sorts of useful Maxpedition goods. Got a Mongo for a gethomebag, Jumbo EDC for EDC. Nice place to stash a full size .45 PX4 w/3 mags and my daily necessities. I carry a P238 in my pocket since I wear athletic shorts all the time.

All three of my Maxpedition bags have zippered handgun enclosures.

Think of it as a "murse". ;)

Purse or murse. clutch is worse.

I don't think I would like having only one free hand while carrying the purse/murse/clutch thing you described in the OP. And I don't see how a purse snatching would put the pistol in your hand, and automatically aimed at the thief, unless the planets and stars were all exactly aligned.

And I can think of a rhyming, common two-word noun phrase that's even worse. ;)

To actually be serious for a moment, it works just as I've described. When someone grabs the bag and (necessarily) pulls it towards themselves, they are forcing the muzzle of the gun to point directly at them. Then when they rip the bag from your hand, the pistol is right there, in the palm of your hand. Unless you're actively fighting for the bag, the net result is that a snatch-and-grab literally puts your gun in your hand and aims it at the bad guy in the same instant.

I'm not a fan of off-body carry or clutches. However, this design actually works. There are couple of purse-carrying women I've wanted to recommend it to but I simply can't find anyone making anything like it any more.

I'd rather wear a fanny pack...
