Masked man attacks woman jogging in Leon Creek Greenway - KABB - San Antonio Top Stories - News, Sports, Weather, Traffic This story drives me crazy. A young woman was recently murdered in O.P. Schnabel park, which is near where this attack took place and along the same greenway path. This last attack happened at 10 at night (insane), but the earlier murder was during broad daylight. After the murder of the young woman on New Year's Eve, the police chief in San Antonio came out and said that there was no reason for people to fear the parks. WTF! Parks and trails have been magnets for scumbags since, forever. But young people now have a mentality of riding their bikes, enjoying nature, running and hiking, etc., but they seem to have lost their survival instincts. Those places are dangerous and they need to be prepared or go in groups.

I've started to see that in cities, people expect all services including protection to be provided for them. It's an illusion but people buy into it because they "believe" in the system. I feel terrible for the victims and their families.

Hopefully the next person he tries to attack gats him.

Not trying to be insensitive, but if you jog alone in a park late at night or where no one can hear you scream... you're kind of a Darwin Award waiting to happen. Especially if you're an unarmed woman.

There are plenty of cheap, safe 24/7 gyms to go exercising at in this town.

But that earlier murder took place in the park parking lot during the day. Cities all around are building these kind of parks and pathways as a part of "green" initiatives but they take no responsibility for creating feeding grounds for criminals, with the chief of police coming out and saying they're safe. This is crazy, and the mentality of the city dwellers who think of the world as their private gym creates easy victims.

It all boils down to knowing where you are and what's going on around you ... situational awareness. I see too many runners tooling along with their iPlod earphones stuck in their ears. They are a running advertisement saying "Hey, I can't hear you coming up behind me so attack/mug/kill my stupid ass." Or, as others have noted, the soon-to-be victim is of the mindset that they can count on the fact that it's daylight, they're in a public place and there is "protection" by the police. With all the violence reported in the news, you would think that people would be more careful about where they are and pay attention to their surroundings. But, the news stories we see disprove that people ARE observant.

Gotta agree with you there, and Flash's comment about the earbuds too.

While I agree to a certain extent about the earphones, it wouldn't be that big of a deal if the runners or cyclists were in public places or neighborhoods, places that are a little safer, during the day of course. I don't really think these people have an expectation of police protection, I just think they buy into the hype that these trails are "green" zones, therefore they must be safe. A quick google search will show that these city paths are havens for gangs and thugs, especially in Houston or other dangerous towns. But the realities of self protection and armed conflict doesn't seem to enter the brains of the yuppie, REI outdoor crowd.

Just wait until they build the "no guns allowed" light rail line on just 2 & 1/2 miles of down town SA. Just millions more spent to help the homeless.

That pretty much describes any park or "green zone" in any city. The gangs use it as a convenient open-air store for their drug sales and sometimes as meeting places or "combat zones" where they can fight other gangs for territorial control.

That is good to know; I had not seen that. So the law contradicts itself, which leaves it up to "Officer discretion." Oh, yay.
