Newer and as good choices abound today. You can't go wrong with either, and accessories are everywhere for both.

I would go with a maverick 88. I have owned a fair amount of mossberg and remington shotguns but I feel like the quality on the 870s has been sliding for awhile(tight chambers, ejection issues). If you are looking for something dirt cheap but good to go, check out the Pardner Pump. I got one for $120 at gander mountain and I use it a few times a month for clays. It' s built like a brick shithouse. If not, my vote is still for the maverick. I believe it has two ejectors like the 500 series does

I own 3 870's, two in 12, and one in 20. They have been 100%, always. I've never owned a Maverick. I hear they are acceptable.

Get what feels and points right for you.

You may not like my recommendation but here goes.

A Mossberg 500 is far superior to a Maverick.
A Remington Wingmaster is far superior to an 870 Express. Spend a few more bucks now and have a gun that will last a lifetime.

Heck a Benelli Nova is better than either the Maverick or 870 Express.

I'm a shotgun snob and I'm not sorry.
