Here I thought you had to be 21 to have a handgun.
Not in Texas. The legal age has long been 18. It is illegal by Fed law for an FFL to sell a hand gun to someone under 21. Has been for many years. The Fed law does not apply to private sales or gifts. Each State has different age limits by State law.

If you are going to keep possession of it, then you never really gifted it to them.

I guess we see it differently.

Lots of people on TGT talk about buying guns for their kids, and grandkids.
Obviously, they will need to stay in the adults possession until 18.

And there is my point. Unlike when I was a kid and when I got my Adult hunting license at 15, the Remington 1100 that was gifted to me really was mine. I kept in my room and took it out when I went hunting.

I don't see them as any less of a "gift".

My shotgun, rifle and pistol I was given by the time I was 8 were all kept in the gun cabinet.
Didn't make it any less of a gift to me.

I was given my first .22 when I was 6.
    Still have it.

I notice that, even today, "news reports" seem contradictory; but most "media" are lining up with the "caught & arrested" version(s).

Sounds that the school "Administrators" are in very deep Doo-Doo !

I pray that this causes folks to realize that their policies CREATE terrible results. And realize that our society must focus on education involving responsibility, character-building, and non-glorification of violence; instead of the GUN !

Recall that London has gone from gun control, to gun ban, to knife control, to hammer control, and now are on wrench control. IDIOCY perpetuated. Soon to be on "umbrella control" ?

Parents being dumb about their kids will not stop me from passing down my personal firearms to my beautiful and well-behaved grandchildren. To be stored safely in their parents possession and taken out and used under supervision.

Do I think they object that the guns are not really theirs? No, I think they treasure that they are getting something of Grandpa's that they get to use, and will eventually be old enough to keep the way they see fit and take it into their own household/family.

But even if they objected and said it's not really theirs... so what, they're kids!! They don't get to make policy. I guess I'm just old fashioned that way...

    The way I explained it to my kids;
It may be "yours", you may have even bought it. But it is "My" house, I am the adult responsible for You. You may own it, but I control it. Period.

    Sigh. . . . . You & they will outgrow that issue.

    My "Kids" are 55, 56, & 57. . . . . . . . Grand-Kids approach 30.
