I get you and Youngguns points. I grew up the same way. However, times have changed like it or not. Kids these days have way more bad influences and are being brought up in a society that isn't exactly the best. I mean, we watched Leave It To Beaver and Father Knows Best. Kids these days have music glorifying murder like its cool. We had friggin Frogger and Pac Man, or Asteroids......they have Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. And yes, I dont care what anyone says.....it all shapes a childs mind.

I do agree with you about the culture and that too goes back to parenting as well. A parent has control over what a child comes in contact with and sometimes as a parent you need to say No! (More times then I care to and mine is only three!! )

I think that the majority of parents in their 20 - 40's just aren't as mature or that much different then a teenager these days . Not all, but many. They relate or like the same thing that a 15 year old of today does.

Also, besides saying "No" from time to time, those guilty pleasures like certain TV shows or video games may need to go away when the children are present.
I like certain shows, but if she's awake or is at home, then if any TV is on at all it would be something educational for her age level, unless it's certain baseball games, then she just has to deal with it!! Hell, even during games I find myself muting the TV and messing around with her so as not to allow the commercials to be any sort of focal point.

I grew up with Castle Wolfenstein and Terminator... I never snapped and killed any Nazi's or robots. ;)

Dad kept his rifles in the pantry next to the freezer that he filled with them. I was allowed to use them whenever I wanted to, but as a kid I was only interested in the .22lr. I was scared of the .30-30 and .30-06
Dad also kept a Beretta .32 in his pocket all the time, legal or not... I didn't even know he had that until I was much older.

I guess we all have our own thoughts, and that is fine. Mine just happen to be that we cannot be with our teenagers 24-7. They get influenced at school, hanging out with friends, or being over at a friends house. Whatever the fact may be, we have to be informed parents.....know whats going on with our kids. At the same time, we still have to be responsible gun owners.

It is a lot different then we were kids. Cell phones. The internet. Video games. Not saying those are the problem, but it does have an effect. Cyber bullying is a concern. Plus some parents are wrapped up being online.

    Cell phones.
Instant contact means instantly being able to cry for help you when make a bad decision. Kids need to think less about "If I do this, how bad could things get?" when contemplating doing something stupid because help is a quick yell away. Cell phones erode independence and the creation of decision-making skills.
    The internet.
The average middle-class 12-year-old has seen more porn than I saw before I was 30. 'Nuff said?
    Video games.
Not much of a factor as far as I can tell.
    Cyber bullying is a concern.
No, it isn't. The complete unwillingness of those being bullied to just block the bullies and disconnect is, however, totally strange and perplexing. If we understood that attachment we could probably help those kids deal with life much, much better.
...some parents are wrapped up being online.
Some parents have always been disconnected. Read Hiram Maxim's biography of his father, entitled A Genius In The Family, for a gun-related tale of how some people are forced to grow up despite their parents instead of with the help of their parents. Bad parents have always been with us and today is no different.

The stuff that is new these days, however, is producing some weird kids. Or I'm just old.

    Probably both. ;)
