I remember thinking that as well at the time.
Remember the results that they published? If I remember correctly, they said something along the lines of:
"They were both very close. I wouldn't call the winning design a 'squeaker'. Nor would I say it won 'by a mile'."
    I think that's almost verbatim.
"Almost", because it's from memory.

Truth was the YF-23 beat the YF-22 on all test criteria except one: maneuverability. It was a political decision to award the F-22 to Lockheed, and I have yet to talk to a former or present fighter pilot who didn't say the better plane lost. So much for giving our boys the best. Well, at any rate, there's a body of evidence to suggest that the YF-23 lives on in a black world program as the follow-on to the SR-71.

My favorite plane of all time:

Agreed. BTW, my Dad was a flight surgeon for the U-2 and SR-71 pilots while stationed at Beale AFB. It was a great place to grow up I can attest!

One of the coolest photos I've seen in a while. Looks almost like a Star Wars X-wing fighter blasting through the atmosphere. Very cool!

I spent most of my 8yrs working on A's and C/D's, I only got to touch the E/F's once when they were still testing them and they flew through Cecil Field. They lost a computer on one of them and we had to swap it out for them. The E/F's are a mean looking jet!
