i have a cuz in the military stationed in MT. He was in an accident and needs to ship his guns home. First off he is in a hospital 3 states away in WA. His friend will ship, should he go through a ffl. or should they they be sent broken down through certified mail?

I would think that since there's no purchase involved, they can just be shipped right to the address he needs. No breaking down required. Just wrap them good and if it were me-I would insure the packages.

I dunno...I thought if you're shipping a rifle or shipping to yourself, then you don't have to worry about an FFL. But...we have several LEO's and I think even a few gun shop employees here that may be able to give us a solid answer.

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity? [Back]

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

FYI, regarding one of your comments. Breaking down, or taking apart a gun does not make it any less legally a gun. Shipping the serial numbered part is just the same as shipping the entire gun in the eyes of the law.
