Hm.. the Spartans huh? I deployed 4 last year, didn't notice an improvement. I still have them hanging, thinking of trying to recharge them with salt and yeast.3rd year of using these.
I'm sold.
Neighborhood organization came around last year and gave everybody a set of those Spartan Pro Tech things. Each house got 3 of them and we all put them up. I've been checking with the other neighbors lately and the consensus is 100% that they didn't help one bit.
Bug zappers kill bugs - and that's very satisfying, but they also attract bugs. So you kinda want them near where you expect to be, but not too close or the bugs may bite you before getting zapped. Also, zapped bugs more or less explode, so you don't want a zapper near where you have food or you'll end up covering it with fried bug guts.
There are 2 basic kinds of mosquitoes: those that breed in standing water and those that breed in mud (e.g., Asian Tigers). The kinds that breed in standing water are more likely to carry disease, but the Asian Tigers can produce biting insects in very little time. Essentially, once it rains and turns the dirt into mud, they hatch and start looking for victims. Getting rid of standing water helps a lot, and you can get those mosquito dunks that go in culverts and drains. They keep the little wigglers from maturing into adults. There are yard sprays that will kill the mud versions, but if it rains enough, the spray washes away.
Short of bringing back DDT, there's no single magic bullet for mosquitoes.
That's my big concern. We still have some fireflies here, and I don't want to do anything to harm them. Luckily they're in the back of the yard, so I can do some mosquito control right around the house.Do any of them guarantee not to kill fireflies???
Yes, but they're very ineffective against mammalian nervous systems. So they're a whole lot safer than dousing your yard with VX. They will harm or kill mammals in huge quantities, but not anything like what you'd spray on your yard.Interestingly alot of pesticides are actually nerve agents, marketed for pest control because it's trickier these days to sell nerve gas.
