just remember according the to BATF it is not a shotgun it is not a hand gun or it is not a rifle.

As far as an ar15 if its got no but stock and is over 26"< I think thats the magic number> it is not a pistol and if it did not start life as a rifle its not a rifle. Its a firearm.
