Preparing a small resource of food and water since the political climate this fall looks unstable. What is the opinion of MREs? The ones on Ebay are very expensive. Perhaps the supermarket canned and packaged items would be less costly and better quality?
what about a military surplus store? The ones we had in the service were pretty decent, and came with skittles or M&M's, sometimes a tootsie roll or something along those lines
There are lots of options. It really just is up to your particular situation. I suggest geting something that tastes good. It's bad for moral to be in a situation requiring you to eat survival food and having it taste like crap.
After I read your post, I checked prices on eBay for MREs. They're actually not too bad. In the Military Commissary where we shop (Shepard AFB), they want almost $8 for one MRE.
Of course, back when I was on Active Duty, we could buy a case of them from the Supply Dept. for $14.
They will go bad pretty quick in the summer heat. I have had to eat a couple of bad MRE's on occasion. It is not a pretty sight, and you might not realize they are bad at first.
If you go to www.majorsurplus.com they have a time table with
temperature and shelf life in months.
Say if you store them at 60 degrees estimated life is 84 months.
70 degrees 55 months etc.
