When I exited the Army in 1982, my rank was listed on my DD214 as Captain. But I wanted to be a Major (really bad), and Major was next in line, so just call me a Major. Anyway, I slung lead (like everyone else) in my tour of Afghanistan. I know, the US was not in the sand war yet. But being a retired Major, the Russian Spetsnaz picked me up and I can tell you – those rebels kicked our asses. I was not doing well with them since I don’t speak or understand Russian, but when we were down at the beach a SAS team swam in and offered me a position in their regiment. Their A team was lost, and needed assistance on finding their way back to the UK. After we got back to the island, I did some training up in the Highlands, just to keep my skill set up to speed. SEAL Team 6 was doing some cross-fit training with us, and got interested in me now that I was a LTC (Lieutenant Colonel). When we got back to the States, I was the first transgender to go thru BUDS, so they called me Shirley. Surely I’m now a Colonel. And Tim Walz was my Command Sargent Major the whole time.
